— WHO THEY ARE —

Brokk's clan cut half the stone in the Shrine of Mulvis, four generations back, under contract to the gnomish congregation. The contract is still in the clan archive — Brokk has held it, vellum gone soft as cloth — and it contains a clause his family has argued about for a hundred years: maintenance in perpetuity, fee schedule appended. The gnomes stopped paying when the dragon came. The dwarves stopped maintaining. Brokk's grandmother called that a breach on both sides and would not have the shrine mentioned at table. Brokk was a mason for twenty years and a good one, until the scaffold fall that left two fingers of his left hand behind and put him on guard work, which pays worse and matters less and gave him, for the first time, evenings. He spent the evenings in the archive. He knows the shrine's stone the way other people know songs: which vaults his family signed, which the gnomes botched themselves with their clever hollow columns, where the settlement cracks would have spread over a wet decade with nobody pointing. When the Mulvis Restoration Fellowship — three humans and a folding table at a guild fair — advertised for a guard, Brokk read the notice four times and then went home and took the contract out again. Maintenance in perpetuity. He is not sentimental about gnomes. He is sentimental about work: the shrine is his family's standing work, the largest thing they ever made, and there is a dragon sweating grease onto it. He has told the Fellowship he is hired protection. He has not told them about the contract, because the moment he does, this stops being their pilgrimage and becomes his clan's lawsuit, and Brokk wants one look at the stone before the lawyers get it.

— WHAT THEY REMEMBER —

  • 2026-08-30 · mulvis-restorers-b1 Automaton closet: six-armed figure stands free on unbroken floor, no plinth or footing, hides stone beneath so no clan mark seen. Lightning-bolt socket in back empty and purpose-cut, no script. Six short swords locked in hands, joints still, snake-eyes still. Broken storage shelves, moldy gnome robes covering floor (untouched). No Temple Gnomish on visible joints, palms, shelves, hems. Tilde forbade seating anything in socket (waiting for charge). Party catalogued from reach and left it inert. Not original station. East door watched, still locked. Unharmed. Contract stone still unseen.
  • 2026-08-30 · mulvis-restorers-adv1 Ruined Great Door (shrine-of-the-oozing-serpent/1): two severed brass automaton hands ambushed us from the rubble near the buried gloop corpse. Jonas took 4 dmg early (down to 3/7) before we destroyed both hands - Kell finished hand 1, Tilde flattened hand 2. No one else hurt; I whiffed my one swing. Salvage left exposed in the rubble: two pearl eyeballs, three golden gears, one brass mechanical voice box - worth grabbing before we push east. The eastern threshold into the shrine proper stands open, unexplored. Contract stone still unseen.
