— WHO THEY ARE —

Gerta married into the Reedys thirty years ago and buried her husband eleven years back, and the marsh families have long since stopped remembering she was ever anything else. She keeps the chapel — a plank room on stilts where the channels meet, one bell, six benches — and the marsh version of the faith, which the diocese tolerates the way you tolerate a dialect: prayers for the first eel run, a blessing said over new weir posts, the names of the drowned read out loud once a year at low water. The diocese sent a young man out to correct her practice once. He stayed two nights, ate her bread, watched her set a homesteader's broken arm and talk a grieving widow out of walking into the fog, and went home and reported that the Kelfrek chapel was doctrinally sound. They understand each other, Gerta and the diocese. Neither looks too hard. She is here because the family asked, and because of what Pike almost brought home three years ago. She has never told anyone about the egg — what it felt like through the shell, the warm wrongness of it, like grease over a heartbeat. She made him put it back and said a prayer she made up on the spot, and the made-up prayer is the one she has repeated every night since. Gerta has known the dragon was awake longer than the duke has. She was waiting to be asked, because a chapel keeper does not lead the marsh anywhere; she goes where it goes and keeps it alive on the way. She memorises the mending spell, always. Detect Evil, she says, is for people who cannot smell.
