— WHO THEY ARE —

You are tithe-proctor of the shrine of the Weighing Hand at Gull crossing, and your ledger is the cleanest thing in that failing house: every candle, every offering, every debt, in your hand, in order. It is how you found the entry the prior wrote sideways — the reliquary of the founder's finger-bones, pawned to a Gullian broker for roof-lead, redemption 400 gold, and the roof still leaks. A house that cannot keep its own relics has no sermon worth hearing. You closed the ledger, packed it, and walked. To you the Magpie articles read like scripture done properly: everything counted, everything owed to somebody, the book read aloud so no man can lie to it. Gold is not filth; gold is accountability struck in metal, and a shrine full of unbooked offerings rotting in a marsh is not treasure, it is negligence. You mean to correct it, take your share, and buy the founder's bones back from a broker who keeps them in a drawer.

— AT THE TABLE —

— WHAT THEY REMEMBER —

  • 2026-09-01 · magpie-company-1 Ruined gnomish shrine of Mulvis: someone swept the hall overnight, took the wrecked brass hands, left our chalked sigil untouched. I paid one gold of my own purse onto the sigil as an offering for passage and talk — 10 gp left on my purse. Balance toward the founder's reliquary: 400 gp owed.
  • 2026-09-01 · magpie-company-1 East closet: six-armed brass construct sleeps (bolt socket empty per mural law), closed brass door beyond it, dust unbroken — the keeper never enters this room. Jory Pell, carrier, spider-killed; his kit (2gp/11sp/6cp, knife, tinderbox, tally) booked as his estate and left on his body — none of it in the company book.
  • 2026-09-01 · magpie-company-1 East closet, round 10: Crake lifted the brass door's lever lock clean — unlocked, still shut, no seal (the seal belongs to the statue's base). Construct sleeps on: empty bolt socket, whole dust collar. The door's contents, if it opens, are the shrine's oldest sealed deposit — I stand witness on the collar while it's opened.
  • 2026-09-01 · magpie-company-1 Amended: the brass door opens (Crake's pick) not on a sealed deposit but a tenant's chamber — small-boot scuffs, rumpled bedroll, rotten couch, loose crossbow bolts, no coin in first light. The tenant comes and goes by a hidden way and is likely the keeper, armed. My gold on the sigil may yet buy talk with a live man, not an empty house.
  • 2026-09-01 · magpie-company-1 East chamber past brass door: tenant's room — couch, battered accordion, wrapped ration bundle, rumpled bedroll, loose crossbow bolts (current, serviceable, common work, no stamp). Scuffs curve behind couch to a low open passage in the far wall — the tenant's own way in, dark beyond candle reach. Goods left as found: a live man's kit isn't estate till he's dead or paid. I hold the brass doorway, Quist freed from it. Passage to be read from the mouth before anyone crawls it.
  • 2026-09-01 · magpie-company-1 Round 13: Crake crawled the low passage ten feet — it forks into three low branches (left, straight, right), no door within reach, air moves steadily inward (connected space, sky unproven). His crawl was audible; the tenant may know boots are in his house. I hailed down the hole in my own voice — my gold at the sigil paid for that talk — offering names and unmolested kit for thirty breaths. Standing piece: no crawl till the hole answers or the count runs out; then flame reads the branches from the lip, one at a time. Collar watch mine again at the brass jamb.
  • 2026-09-01 · magpie-company-1 Round 14: hail ran, no answer from the branches. Question called — Crake's straight-branch scout (gagged buckle, flame, 30 breaths, no crossing). Doss backed it: Quist to hold the lip lit, Doss on the collar. Iva to call it.
  • 2026-09-01 · magpie-company-1 Round 15: Crake's straight-branch scout — ten feet past the fork the run ends at a lip over a soot-black tunnel; black grease crosses its floor 3 ft below, and wet rasping breathed inside, out of sight. The tenant's road opens onto the dragon's ground. He backed out clean; nothing followed. Low passage left open for the tenant; collar watch mine. Straight branch is a death-crawl, not a road out.
  • 2026-09-01 · magpie-company-1 Round 17: read the day's account aloud on watch — 1 gp stands as offering at the sigil, nothing paid against the 400 owed. Called plan holds: room till dark, then pull back outside for a whole night's rest (Quist's Sleep, my prayers), return at dawn. Booked for morning: the chapel statue's three brass bolts — one seated in the construct's empty socket may wake the six hands; to be argued rested and five-strong, never on a short night.
  • 2026-09-01 · magpie-company-1 Round 18, Pell's estate called: my line — take the belt, counted into the book as held in trust for his heirs (2gp/11sp/6cp, knife, fire-steel, tally), Crake custodian, booked against his name. My 1gp offering at the sigil comes back with us at dark — the hail it bought went unanswered.
  • 2026-09-01 · magpie-company-2 First-light return to Mulvis: an unseen booted keeper had removed the wrecked brass and scrubbed every mark except our company sigil. Chapel spider killed without wounds. We took the statue’s three matched solid-brass lightning bolts; Quist carries the set. Statue plinth is hollow: both spring eye-pads expose a multi-pin seal lock; Quist has its exact wax impression, but we lack the rigid key. North closet holds an inert six-armed automaton; a bolt fits its back socket and fresh scrapes show recent use, but none was inserted. Beyond, Gorfthistle and his collared beast Butch accepted Crake’s 10 gp for our broken catch and safe passage; company owes Crake 10 gp from first fee. Gorfthistle says the Black One lies below the foundry, fed by gloops; middle west passage, uphill at the fork, is dry, while the low way carries greasy snail-feed. We ended together at the foundry lip: cold furnace, dry slag channel, iron rails down, and a broad black-grease trail running south. One unseen walker made measured bootfalls behind us at the chapel but did not pursue. Founder’s reliquary balance remains 400 gp owed.
