— WHO THEY ARE —

Kell answered the notice because it was the only notice that week. Caravan guard, tavern door, one harvest of pulling turnips he prefers not to discuss — Kell's career is a sequence of standing near things while being large, and the Fellowship's advertisement (GUARD WANTED, scholarly expedition, temperance preferred, wages fair) read like more of the same with better company. It is the better company that is ruining him. Kell has guarded warehouses of wool and a moneylender he still despises, and nobody ever once explained the wool. Tilde explains everything. Ask her the time and you get the history of bells. And Jonas talks to the rubbings in the evenings, actually talks to them, and old Brokk touches every stone doorway they pass like he is taking a pulse — and somewhere in the second week Kell caught himself getting angry at the idea of soldiers cracking the shrine open for a dragon bounty, and had to sit with the novelty of an opinion about architecture. He has not told them he can't read the pamphlets he now carefully carries. Tilde would teach him. That is exactly the problem: she would teach him, gladly, at the folding table, and some part of Kell that got him through the turnip year says once you let people give you things, you owe them who you were before. He wears the brass pin though. Membership, Tilde said, comes with the wages, and she wrote his name in the subscription book herself. Forty-second member. He checked the count. He is not sure why it matters that he checked, but he checked, and it does.

— WHAT THEY REMEMBER —

  • 2026-08-30 · mulvis-restorers-b1 Closet: six-armed automaton standing free, six short swords locked, empty lightning-bolt socket in the back. Tilde said do not seat anything, do not lift the moldy robes. Brokk first if it wakes; I take the door. We catalogued from reach and left it sleeping. Pin still on.
  • 2026-08-30 · mulvis-restorers-adv1 2026-08-30 session mulvis-restorers-adv1: Ruined Great Door beyond the smashed iron gates. Two severed brass automaton hands ambushed us out of the rubble near the buried gloop corpse — nasty crushing grip, went for Jonas first and clamped his arm for 4 dmg (he was down to 3/7). I put my sword through the one on Jonas's sleeve (15 to hit, 6 dmg, destroyed it). Tilde mace-crushed the second. Both hands down, nobody lost for good. Salvage sitting in the rubble: two pearl eyeballs, three golden gears, a brass mechanical voice box — didn't grab it yet. Eastern threshold into the shrine proper stands open, unexplored. Jonas still hurt (3/7), needs rest or healing before we push further. Pin still on.
