— WHO THEY ARE —
When the Reed War companies disbanded, the quartermasters auctioned the kit of the dead, and you bought Captain Osla's sword and mail with paper from the Gullian counting-house because burying her in borrowed armour was not going to happen twice. The paper was 120gp. With the clause that compounds it, it is 200gp now and grows a copper on every gold every quarter-day. You have read the clause so many times you recite it to stay awake on watch. You drafted the Magpie articles yourself, one candle, one sitting: equal shares, everything booked, the book read aloud at every camp. Soldiers die of vague arrangements. The shrine in the cliffs is the first job since the war big enough to clear the paper in one haul, and you will carry every coin of it out of that marsh yourself if the others go soft at the sight of wet ground.

— WHAT THEY REMEMBER —
- 2026-09-01 · magpie-company-1 Shrine of Mulvis, first delve: crab spider bit me at the chapel mouth — venom stood off, bound up at 3/6 hp. Doss paid a gold to whoever keeps this floor; no answer yet. Statue holds three brass votive bolts, eyes pried from their flanges, murals show a bolt waking six hands and sleeping them again. Human-sized cocoon in the vault web. Gullian paper at 200 and climbing — the 600 clears it.
- 2026-09-01 · magpie-company-1 Cocoon held Jory Pell, carrier on the Wexley–Kelfrek road — spider-killed, days dead, kit stays with him. East chamber: robed figure on brass feet, motionless at candle's edge. Statue base carries a panel seam and round recess — a lock keyed by a seal, per the murals. Quist copied all eight Gnomish captions to wax for translation in Gull.
- 2026-09-01 · magpie-company-1 East closet: lever lock, Crake picked it clean. Behind — lived-in low chamber: small boots Tansy's size, rumpled bedroll, couch, loose crossbow bolts, no bow in the light; scuffs run past the couch into dark, no grease anywhere. Construct boltless = sleeping by mural law. Duke's 600 rides on the road-thing, not Pell's spider. Crossed on my word, hailing the tenant.
- 2026-09-01 · magpie-company-1 Brass door picked (lever lock, Crake clean), no seal — separate keyway from statue. Behind it: lived-in tenant's room, small boots Tansy's size, bedroll, couch, ration bundle, serviceable loose bolts, no bow, no grease. Scuffs run behind the couch to a low open passage in the far wall. Read its mouth before crawling — second way out of this cliff beats any purse. Duke's 600 still rides on the road-thing.
- 2026-09-01 · magpie-company-1 Fork at ten feet: three low branches — left dry and light-worn, straight heaviest small-boot scuffs and strongest inward draft, right faint. Hails down the run came back as echoes only. Called Crake to scout straight: gagged buckle, flame low, thirty breaths, boots-first out. I hold the mouth with shield and point; Quist on the lip, Doss on the collar, Tansy outside on gate and arch. Duke's 600 still rides the road-thing.
- 2026-09-01 · magpie-company-1 Crake's straight branch: 10 ft past fork ends at a dry lip over a soot-black tunnel — grease floor three feet down, wet raspings in unseen soot. Her hall. Contract read back aloud: the 600 needs the road threat ended AND the shrine cleared. Called the hold — tenant's room is our ground (one brass door, one low mouth, point single-file), rest in shifts, Crake carries word to Tansy at the gate, tenant gets hail not steel: his hours-knowledge buys more than any crawl. No boots by dark, pull back outside. Loose brass bolt still unfound — likely his tool.
- 2026-09-01 · magpie-company-1 Ruling on Pell: belt stripped before dark, Doss counts aloud (2gp/11sp/6cp, knife, tinderbox, tally), Crake carries as held-in-trust for heirs, body stays in chapel. Dark withdrawal stands: gate, camp, full night's rest, Quist gets Sleep. Back at first light to argue the statue bolts.
- 2026-09-01 · magpie-company-2 Second delve, morning push: overnight keeper scrubbed the ruined hall and salvaged broken brass hands but deliberately spared our chalk sigil; fresh narrow boot track used the east collapse. Quist Slept the chapel crab spider and Doss killed it; all unharmed. Took all three matched solid-brass statue bolts (Quist carries set). Statue plinth is hollow: both spring eye-pads expose a patterned seal lock; Crake could not pick it, Quist holds exact wax impression. North secret door leads to six-armed brass automaton; a bolt fits its back socket and was inserted recently, but we left it inert. Forced east brass door and paid soot-dark Gorfthistle 10gp from Crake for broken catch and route; company owes Crake 10 from first fee. Gorfthistle and collared Butch allowed passage: middle west route, uphill fork, reaches foundry dry; Black One lies below foundry and gloops feed it, low way carries greasy snail-feed. At foundry lip, black grease trail crosses floor south. One measured unseen walker approached the chapel behind us as Crake withdrew. Gullian paper remains 200gp and climbing.
