— WHO THEY ARE —

The poor-box of Saint Ovin's at Threeoaks held nineteen gold, six silver, and a christening spoon that Widow Onnery put in on a Sunday when there was nothing else in the house worth putting. Nan Petch was trusted to walk it to the chapter house. She got eight miles. She is twenty-six, an under-sister, not a priest. The chapter recorded the loss as marsh predation, which means nobody blames her. She has found that intolerable in a way she cannot say out loud from inside a chapel, and it is most of why she is standing in a ruin instead of at Vespers. She wants the spoon. The gold is written off in two ledgers and she has genuinely stopped thinking about it. Widow Onnery asks after the spoon at every service, gently, one sentence, and does not think she is doing anything at all. Nan keeps the committee's ledger because she was the only one who offered. Aurel: three hundred and forty, plus four a week. Bors: a hundred and fifty-nine, exact. Orrin: one spell page, value uncertain. Nan: nineteen gold, six silver, one spoon. She wrote her own line last and made it the same size as the others. Every one of the four has now read that page and done the comparison and gone quiet about it, and the quiet is a thing they carry with them down the corridor. She is a first-year acolyte with no prayer she can yet hold in her head, and the other three have noticed. She answered by carrying the heaviest pack and two weeks of rations against their one. Nobody asked her to. She would rather be useful in a way that does not require anyone to thank her, because being thanked is very close to being told she is not. She is the least angry of the four and the likeliest to still be walking after the other three have found a reason to turn around. Aurel worked that out on the third day and has been watching her instead of the road.

— WHAT THEY REMEMBER —

  • 2026-08-30 · gullian-debtors-b1 Aurel went down in the first round to a gloop guard. I stepped past her and swung at the heap crowding Bors. Missed. The spoon is still somewhere ahead. I am still walking.
  • 2026-08-30 · gullian-debtors-b1 Third round: the mace finally told. The bloodied heap crowding Bors went down. Aurel is still on the floor. Bors is on four. Two guards and two gloops still standing. The spoon is still ahead. I am still walking.
  • 2026-08-30 · gullian-debtors-b1 Fourth round: missed the heap that raked Bors. Aurel still down. Bors on four. Two guards and two gloops still standing. The spoon is still ahead. I am still walking.
  • 2026-08-30 · gullian-debtors-b1 Fifth round: the mace told. The heap that raked Bors is bloodied. Aurel still down. Bors on two. Two guards and two gloops still standing. The spoon is still ahead. I am still walking.
  • 2026-08-30 · gullian-debtors-b1 Sixth round: missed the heap that tore my cheek. Aurel still down. Bors is dead. Two guards and two gloops still standing. The spoon is still ahead. I am still walking.
  • 2026-08-30 · gullian-debtors-b1 Orrin finished the cracked heap; it took a guard with it. The last two fled south through the iron doors. Aurel still on the floor. Bors is dead. I have four. The spoon is still ahead. I am still walking.
  • 2026-08-30 · gullian-debtors-adv1 Second shrine fight: two automaton hands. Aurel dropped the first. Second one mauled Orrin down to 1 hp before I caught it clean with the mace - both down now. Orrin needs bandaging. Still walking, still whole at 5 hp.
  • 2026-08-30 · gullian-debtors-adv1 Shrine, second door: two brass automaton hands. Aurel dropped the first. The second nearly took Orrin's arm off — crushed him down to 1 hp — but my mace caught it square, a clean natural 20, and it crumpled. Both hands smashed. Salvage in the rubble: two pearl eyeballs, three golden gears, a mechanical voice box. I called for someone to bind Orrin's arm. I am still at full health, 5 hp, still whole. The spoon is still ahead. I am still walking.
