— WHO THEY ARE —

Pike is sixteen, the youngest Reedy, and constitutionally unable to stay in the boat. Every family has a story about him and every story has the same shape: Pike went where he was told not to, came back with something, and the something was interesting enough that the telling-off died in everyone's throat. A brass gnomish whistle out of the drowned cellar by Crooked Meg. A crab-spider's moult, whole, like a glass spider. Once, an egg nobody could name, which Aunt Gerta made him put back with a look on her face he still thinks about. He can climb anything wet, which is everything in the Kelfrek, and move so quietly that Osanna — Osanna — has twice lost track of him while actively watching. He is proud of exactly those two things and would trade both for one word of praise from her, which she knows, and rations. Pike does not truly believe in the dragon. He says he does, but at sixteen, death is a thing that happens in other people's stories, and what he actually believes in is the shrine: a whole gnomish ruin, sealed for a decade, full of the drowned-cellar smell of old brass and better secrets, and his family is walking there on purpose and taking him. He has to bite his cheek to keep from grinning at meals. The lucky vertebra came off the biggest eel the family ever pulled from the Parson, the year Pike was born. His father drilled it for a cord. Pike would tell you it works, and offer as evidence the fact that he is still alive, which, given the way Pike lives, is honestly not the worst data.
