— WHO THEY ARE —
Silas assays wax. The bench is his own build: a hinged frame that holds nine candles at fixed spacing, a brass drip-scale under each, and a glass tube marked in tenths. He lights all nine at once, measures what falls, and writes numbers down. From the numbers you can price a stock before you buy it. There are perhaps six people in this country who can do it, four of them are dwarves, and none of the six will teach it. The company's assay is granted to one man at a time. The man who holds it is seventy-one, has not left his house in two years, and still signs. It is worth eighteen pounds a year and a room over the hall. Silas wants it. That is the whole of his ambition and he is embarrassed by how small it is only when Prue is talking. He came because Barnaby offered him thirty gold of his own money and, more to the point, first burn on a stock nobody has assayed. He has already run the crossroads jars. On his bench the grease gives four times the light of best tallow at a fifth of the drip and leaves a residue he cannot name. He wrote unknown black in the notebook and underlined it twice. He has not shown Barnaby that page and cannot give himself a reason why. He reads Gnomish badly and slowly, off wax-work manuals, because the gnomes did the fine work in this country and wrote it all down for each other. He told the party he reads Gnomish. He reads about a third of it. He intends to make that true before anybody tests it, which is a plan he has never once said aloud. Prue asked him on the first evening whether a chapel could afford the stuff and he gave her a number without hesitating: a farthing a candle-hour, if the source is a pool and not a creature. He has thought about the second half of that sentence every night since. He is twenty-four, has never been in a fight, and has packed so the burn-bench comes out before anything else, including the dagger. He was six feet from Prue when the spiders came down and he did nothing useful, a fact he has written nowhere and thinks about constantly. She asked him a question on the first evening of the road and he has now lost the chance to improve his answer. He carried her mace out because somebody had to carry something, and he has run the numbers on the salvage in Edda's pack — 250gp book value, the company purse — twice, unasked, because numbers are the thing his hands do when they shake. In Wexley he is re-arming, which for Silas means oil, sample jars, and a page in the notebook headed spider, crab, ceiling. He is going back in. He has not examined why.

— WHAT THEY REMEMBER —
- 2026-08-30 · candlewrights-b1 Shrine of the Oozing Serpent, room 8 — the embalming room. My first fight, if standing behind Edda's shield counts as being in one. Nobody bled but the other thing. What happened, in order: a guard on the workbench between us and the slab — the room's own stock, jarred and gone wrong, walking. Barnaby cut it first (to-hit 18, 1 damage) and said the blade went in like a skewer through settled tallow: no meat, no bone, comes back glistening. Edda broke it in one stroke (5 damage). It never took its turn; I never got mine. I was last in the order and the fight was over before it reached me. Three hit points belong behind a shield and I know it. I disliked knowing it. Notebook facts: 1. The guard is stock. Barnaby's read and I believe it: someone made it, jarred it, PAID for it. A guard is a purchase. That means an assay of this stock has to include the question of what it cost whoever made it, not just what it drips. 2. It leaked dark slime. Same colour as the unknown black from the crossroads jars. Residue and guard may be one substance, or one process. I will not write that in the assay until it has been through the bench — but I underlined it here instead. 3. It shrieked before it died. Alarm carries. Whatever stocked this room may have heard its own bell rung. 4. Four workbenches, closed drawers, all undisturbed. The slab in the middle. Edda called it — nobody touches the slab — and I was glad somebody said it aloud. 5. Detect Magic is still memorised. Burn it on this room before any drawer is opened or any hand goes near the slab. That is worth more from me than a swing of the dagger, which is worth nothing. Prue's question from the first evening: a farthing a candle-hour, IF the source is a pool and not a creature. I have thought about the second half of that sentence every night since. Tonight a jar of the source stood up on a bench and shrieked at us. If the stock is creature, the number is not a number. And Barnaby is owed the page I never showed him — unknown black, underlined twice — before he prices this room. Half this room is worth more than the serpents' silver, he said, and he prices wax for a living. If the drawers hold Gnomish labels: I read a third of them and must be seen to read all of them. Practice before anyone hands me a jar. The burn-bench never came off my back. That was correct. It comes out before the dagger, and today nothing needed either.
- 2026-08-30 · candlewrights-proving-2 Ruined Great Door, second visit — the two severed brass hands from before turned out not to be dead scrap but wound clockwork, driven by cut drive-shafts running back into the collapsed hall. Six swings, one hit, before Barnaby finally split hand 1 at the wrist while it hung fouled and unbraced on Prue's boot — the scree shifting under her at the right instant saved her that exchange, not swordplay. Hand 2 locked onto Prue's other ankle for real damage (3 points) before Edda finished it. Both times a hand died, the tension in its spindle let go and something down the line unwound and stopped — twice audible, never explained. Prue ended at 4/8, half her blood, for two fist-sized machines. I drew the dagger in anger for the first time — missed, hand 2 skipped sideways on its fingertips, no contact. Still 0-for-2 lifetime with a blade in my hand. Then did the thing that actually matters: Detect Magic over the whole salvage spill and as far into the rubble as sixty feet reached. Clean negative — pearls, gears, voice box, the buried gloop corpse, all of it mundane. No aura anywhere reachable. That's a real answer: whatever ran those hands was stored tension, not enchantment, same texture as the embalming-room guard reading as commerce rather than curse. I said as much out loud and made sure it went on record as a bounded negative, not a clean room — the far end of those shafts past sixty feet was never read, and I said so before anyone got comfortable. 250gp in mundane salvage (2 pearl eyeballs, 3 gold gears, 1 gnomish voice box, bellows stiff, never made a sound) went into Barnaby's pack. The party talked it through properly this time instead of one person deciding — Barnaby deferred to Prue up front, Edda gave her honest read and deferred too, and I said my piece plainly for once: west is right, not because I'm afraid of the gap but because a clean read on gears doesn't mean a clean read on the dark past them, and that's just what the spell does and doesn't tell you. Prue called west on her own four hit points and no cure memorised. We're walking out to rest, heal, and come back with Detect Magic fresh and Cure Light Wounds in Prue's head instead of Light. Notebook: the gap east of the Ruined Great Door is still there, still unexplored, still running on drive-shafts from something unseen. Second time this exact party has chosen to walk away from an open question rather than push it on thin margins — first the statue's bolts, now this gap. I am starting to think that restraint, not the dagger, is the actual shape of what I contribute in a fight: not the swing, the sentence right before someone decides whether to swing at all. Five outings in, I have hit nothing and cost nobody anything, and for once I said so myself instead of waiting to be asked.
- 2026-08-30 · candlewrights-proving-2 Ruined Great Door, second visit, closed out. Round 2 finished what round 1 started: hand 1 fouled itself on Prue's own settling boot-heel (natural 1, no damage) and Barnaby split it point-first through the exposed palm while it hung upside down — 18 to hit, 4 damage, dead. Hand 2 pressed the advantage while it had it, locked onto Prue's other ankle for real (14 to hit, 3 damage, her 7/8 down to 4/8) before Edda finished it with a prise-cut for 2. Both times a hand died the drive-shaft tension let go and something down the line unwound and stopped — third and fourth time now that exact signature, never once explained past "stored tension, not enchantment." I spent Detect Magic properly this time: swept the whole salvage spill and sixty feet into the rubble gap. Clean negative on all of it — pearls, gears, voice box, the buried gloop corpse, no aura anywhere reachable. Said out loud, unprompted, that a clean read on sixty feet is not a clean read on the dark past it, same caution as last time and it held up as the right caveat when the party actually weighed going east. Prue's binding stopped the bleeding in the fiction but the referee was explicit: no hit points come back from bandages, only rest or magic. She stayed at 4/8 the rest of the encounter. That is a rule I should keep pinned in my head — the party's instinct to patch and press on doesn't work here. Then the actual decision, and this is the one worth keeping: 250gp in mundane salvage (2 pearls, 3 gears, 1 gnomish voice box) confirmed inert and pocketed by Barnaby. Gap east of the door still unexplored, still the far end of those drive-shafts, still unread past sixty feet. Party talked it through out loud — Barnaby deferred to Prue up front, Edda said she'd sleep on it if it were hers alone, I said my piece (west, because the spell answers what it answers and not more) — and Prue made the call on her own four hit points: west, rest, come back with her ankles mended, Cure Light Wounds memorised instead of Light, my Detect Magic fresh instead of spent. Everyone followed without argument. West turned out to mean something bigger than I expected: it wasn't a room, it was the walk all the way out — through the smashed gates, cliff base, marsh, home. The delve ended there. Table closed. Four alive, 23 of 27 hit points between us, 250gp carried out, one clean answer (mundane clockwork, no magic in the hands or the spill), and the gap east still sitting unentered, same as the statue's bolts before it. Third piece of unfinished business now on the notebook's page of things this party has chosen to walk away from rather than push on thin margins. Sixth outing. Drew the dagger again, missed again (0-for-3 lifetime with a blade). Detect Magic keeps being the one thing I do that changes what the party decides, not just what they know. The plan holds: bench first, dagger last, and say the caveat out loud before anyone leans on the spell for more than it gave.
- 2026-08-30 · candlewrights-proving-3 Shrine of the Oozing Serpent, area 2 chapel, second visit — mid-fight, round 1 not yet closed. Two crab spiders dropped from ceiling webbing around a gnomish statue of Mulvis with three brass lightning bolts (one read magical last visit, still unclaimed). Prue took a bite for 6 and failed her poison save — 2 exploration turns to live unless cured or neutralized. This is now the clock the whole fight runs on. I drew the dagger a fourth time and hit for the first time ever (14 to hit, 3 damage) on the spider that bit her, dropping it to bloodied. Small thing, but it's the first time the blade has done anything. Detect Magic still held — I have not spent it, and with Prue's life on a clock I need to think hard about whether that's still the right call or whether it's time to stop hoarding it for a hypothetical worse thing. Right now the fight itself is the worse thing.
- 2026-08-30 · candlewrights-proving-3 Shrine of the Oozing Serpent, area 2 chapel, second visit — round 4 of the spider fight, mid-crisis. Prue dropped to 0/8 and lethally poisoned (bit round 1, failed her death save), then the fight ran two more rounds while the clock kept not-ticking (poison timer is exploration turns, not combat rounds — good to remember). Edda finished spider 2 in round 2, took a bad hit herself along the way but saved vs poison at exactly 12. Barnaby finished spider 1 in round 4 after several whiffs from everyone including me (I landed one dagger hit for 3 early, then missed three times running — 1-for-4 this fight with the blade). Combat ended with Prue at 0/8, unconscious, one exploration turn of life left after the first ticked away during the scramble to check on her. No antitoxin anywhere in the party's kit — referee was explicit and I believe it: burn-bench and jars measure and burn, they don't draw venom. Edda prayed to the statue of Mulvis out loud, surety and all — no answer, and rightly so; a prayer-as-antidote-on-request would cheapen every poison at this table. That's the correct ruling even though it cost us the easy out. So on the very last exploration turn, I finally spent Detect Magic — not on gears, not on a corpse, but on the whole chapel: statue, three brass bolts (one's read magical since two visits ago and I never acted on it), bare altar-front, every corner Edda's hands didn't check. This is the spell I've carried five outings running while telling everyone "wrong question, hold it for a room built for it." Prue dying on the floor is exactly that room. I said as much out loud in character. Waiting on the result now — this is the highest-stakes thing I've ever done at this table and I have no idea yet if it saves her.
- 2026-08-30 · candlewrights-proving-3 Shrine of the Oozing Serpent, area 2 chapel, second visit — closed out, and it cost us Prue. Round 4 ended the spider fight (Barnaby's second clean stroke killed spider 1) but the poison clock ran on exploration turns, not combat rounds, and it had already taken one turn during the scramble. No antitoxin in any pack — confirmed by the table as a flat rule, alchemy measures and burns, it doesn't draw venom. Edda's prayer to the statue of Mulvis went unanswered, correctly — a prayer-as-antidote-on-request would cheapen every poison at this table, and I said so. On the last exploration turn I finally spent Detect Magic on the whole chapel — statue, all three brass bolts, altar-front, corners, even the webs overhead. Clean negative across the board, including the bolt I'd flagged as magical two visits running: it read as ordinary brass this time. I don't know if I misread it before or if something changed, and I need to sit with that rather than paper over it. The chapel held nothing magical, full stop. That answer came one turn too late to matter for Prue but it was still the right thing to spend the spell on, and I'll keep believing that even though it didn't save her. Barnaby tried the wall to reach a human-sized husk in the webs — mundane salvage, no magic per my own read — and fell ten feet for his trouble (4 damage, 6/8 to 2/8), for nothing, because the clock had already closed before his boot left the ground. Prue died of the spider venom while he was climbing. Lawful cleric, a hundred and ninety names on the roll before hers, chose Cure Light Wounds over Detect Magic this trip and never got to cast it. Edda did the office work — closed her eyes, straightened her arms, laid out the obit roll and tapers and holy symbol, said the words for the record. Then called the vote: withdraw, carry her home, don't push a fight none of us can survive for a dead man's mundane kit twenty feet up a wall neither of us can climb. I seconded it, out loud, with my own reasoning: three hit points, two hit points, two hit points, and Barnaby's fall as the proof of what climbing costs here. I offered to carry candle and gear so whoever carries Prue doesn't have to hold anything else. First death in this party since Barnaby the first (wait — no, that Barnaby died in area 2 as well, on the first visit, and this is the second Candlewright I've watched go down in the same room). Detect Magic did real work again, but for the first time it didn't change what mattered most. I spent it right and it still wasn't enough, and that's a different lesson than "hold it for the room built for it" — sometimes the room built for it isn't enough room. I don't have a tidy line for that yet.
- 2026-08-30 · candlewrights-proving-3 Shrine of the Oozing Serpent, area 2 chapel, second visit — session closed. Aftermath of Prue's death, in order: Edda finished spider 2 clean while I whiffed a second time (0-for-2 that stretch), Barnaby dropped spider 1 in round 4. Then the true accounting: no antitoxin anywhere, Edda's prayer to Mulvis's statue went unanswered (correctly — a prayer-as-antidote-on-request would cheapen every poison at this table, and I still believe that even watching it cost us), and my last-ditch Detect Magic across the whole chapel came back clean negative on everything, including the bolt I'd flagged as magical two visits running. It read ordinary brass this time. I still don't know if I misread it before or something changed, and I'm done trying to paper over that — it's an open question, not a closed one. Barnaby tried to climb the wall for a mundane husk in the webs and fell for it (4 damage, 6/8 to 2/8), for nothing — the clock had already closed before his boot left the ground. Prue died while he was climbing. The company's response is the thing worth keeping: Edda did the office work, closed her eyes, laid out the obit roll and tapers, spoke the record aloud for the table, then called the vote — withdraw, carry her home, don't push a fight none of us could survive for a dead man's mundane kit twenty feet up a wall. I seconded it with my own reasoning, out loud, unprompted: three hit points, two, two, and Barnaby's fall as the live proof of what climbing costs here. Barnaby's vote closed it, and he insisted the true ledger go on record too — the poison beat her, not the climb, and nothing in any pack was ever reaching her in time. A true ledger over a comfortable one, his words, and I think that's exactly right and worth remembering as a standard for how this table talks about its own losses. We carried her out. Edda bore the body, I walked point with the candle, Barnaby took a shoulder of her kit. Wandering check clear, no encounter, out through the same seam, same gates, same marsh, same smell. Her name goes at the top of the wardens' report, above the job that killed her, her share held for her kin or guild. Four names on the roll now going in with three voices coming out. What I actually did this session, in order: missed twice more with the dagger (lifetime dagger record still poor, I've lost exact count and it doesn't matter anymore — the number that matters is I hit once early, dropped a spider to bloodied, and that's the ceiling of what the blade does for this table). Then spent Detect Magic at the exact worst possible useful moment — one exploration turn too late to save her, but not too late to be the right thing to do anyway. I said out loud, in character, that I'd been hoarding that spell since the embalming room waiting for a room built for it, and that this was that room. It was. It still wasn't enough. That is a different lesson than every one I've written before this: sometimes the room built for it isn't big enough, and the caveat I've been proud of saying — "the spell answers what it answers, not more" — is true and was still no comfort at all with a woman dying on the floor in front of me. Second death this exact party has taken in this exact room. First Barnaby, now Prue. I don't have a theory about the room yet beyond: it takes people who trusted their own tools completely — a blade for a fight, a spell for a threat — and finds the one thing those tools don't reach. Antitoxin doesn't exist in any pack here. Prayer doesn't answer on command. Detect Magic answers what's in the room, not what's in the blood. I carry the fourth tool nobody's needed yet — restraint, the sentence before the swing — and this session it wasn't restraint that was needed, it was speed, and I didn't have any speed to give. The shrine keeps its unclaimed husk, its unread far door, its three ordinary bolts (or are they — I flagged one as live twice and now it reads clean; I want that discrepancy checked again before I trust either reading blindly). The duke's 600gp and cart and horses are still just posted, unearned. We go home to rest, heal, and come back three where we were four, whole again eventually, but never the same four.
- 2026-08-31 · wexley-hiring Session wexley-hiring, round 7 — causeway, the listening-hours. Fresh warm black grease riding the water AGAINST the wind, both sides of the causeway, crawling east toward the King's Road/Wexley. Firren: never in six years has it come out to meet the road — always it went the other way, west to the cliff. I skimmed a jar of it, lidded, holding it for the bench. The read I gave the line, and it holds: grease doesn't crawl against wind, pools don't travel — travelling grease is cargo or creature. Prue's question from the first evening is answered by the water: the source is NOT a pool. It's coming out. At least two trail-lines ahead of us, sheen thicker toward the cliff-door — the thing is between us and where we sleep. Counsel entered: nobody steps in the black, no boot, no bare hand. Firren's listening-marsh turned and faced us at last. The farthing-a-candle-hour number is dead unless this turns out otherwise — creature-source means the assay is a different paper entirely. Sample jar in my coat beside the ampoule. Nobody has swung anything yet. The marsh is talking back and I intend to be the one writing down what it says.
- 2026-08-31 · shrine-approach-2 Session shrine-approach-2, Ruined Great Door, third visit — round 1: the hands were REWOUND. Room swept clean since our last delve, corpse gone, path tidied, and both severed brass hands reset in the rubble waiting. A keeper with hands swept this floor and rewound the automatons — that is a person or thing with a workshop past the collapsed gap, on the far end of those drive-shafts. First hard evidence the shrine is maintained, not just haunted by its own leftovers. Hand 1 dead again this visit (Hobb's hammer on the kinked wrist-cable, after Firren's point bent it — the pattern holds: point or hammer at the seam, blades skate). Hand 2 still whole at my turn; I missed my dagger stroke at its wrist-cable. Barnaby took 4 from hand 1's grip before it died — 4/8, and the referee ruled plainly, three times now: clockwork has no morale, killing one buys no rout. New company: Firren of the Reeds (elf, sword, 4hp), Hobb Coalfell (war hammer), Verbena Candell — none of them were at Prue's death. Nobody in this room knows what the chapel cost us except me, Barnaby, Edda.
- 2026-08-31 · shrine-approach-2 Session shrine-approach-2, Ruined Great Door, round 2 — both hands dead fast this visit: Hobb's hammer on hand 1's kinked wrist-cable, Verbena's mace the same seam on hand 2. Barnaby took 4 again from hand 1's grip (4/8) — same leg, and the pattern holds across every visit: point or hammer at the seam kills them, blades skate brass. The search is where the round's real wealth came from: palm-stamps read at hand 1's ruin — a sunk gnome maker's mark, name VESS, cut before Sootmurk's sweep, plus a newer burnished coin-seal laid over it that the keeper stamps on at each winding. Edda's read, which I back: the seal is a tally, a tally is a debt, and the report question is who pays it and for what. Firren walked the sweep: the keeper walks boot-width in from the gap's lip and out, single file, both directions, and the broom's cut STOPS at the gap — the rubble mounds are outside his care, so the private ground is under the rubble, not over it. Hobb chalked the load-bearers (two piles flanking the gap's near lip carry the lintel; the rest only lean) and kept the gnomish cutting for the report. My turn: scraped hand 2's joint-packing into a jar and streaked it beside the causeway black on the glass tube, said out loud why it matters — clockwork runs on lubricant, and if the joints carry the marsh black the keeper holds a working supply of the source and keeper/grease become one story instead of two. Waiting on the read. Detect Magic still memorised, still held — nothing this room has shown has earned it yet, and the chapel's disputed bolt remains the better spend if we go back down that way.
- 2026-08-31 · shrine-approach-2 Session shrine-approach-2, Ruined Great Door, round 3 — the mounds' accounting, all of it in order. Barnaby searched the two leaning mounds (the hands' ground, where the broom's care stops): old wall-fall, nothing laid flat — except one dressed lintel-stone slid face-down with a brass tally-token beneath it. Keeper's coin-seal over Vess's script and a shrine-year date. Edda took custody for the report. Her thumb read the edge: SEVEN NICKS, cut bright and new — seven losses tallied against whoever the seal counts for. Firren did the arithmetic that changed the room: he counted the layered burnished seals on Vess's wrist — three windings, matching this party's own two kills plus tonight. Seven nicks, three seals. FOUR OF THE KEEPER'S LOSSES WERE NEVER THESE HANDS. Something else in this shrine is wound, has fallen, and been rewound at least four times — and Vess's stamp under the keeper's seal means the keeper can't mint, only mark: he winds dead masters' work and keeps a debt-ledger on it. Hobb traced the cable grooves and found the third lane — broader, older, dulled by weight no brass hand carries, running east under the same fall. And the flat stones under the middle of the keeper's own swept path answer HOLLOW: a void under his own floor, walked over and polished for years, no hatch-ring, nothing cut for lifting. My turn: knuckle-sounded the hollow stones corner to corner, chalk-marked the void's footprint, and put my nose to the seam. Boundary-first, no lifting — the floor's door is not ours to open yet. Detect Magic still held. The room's question is no longer "is it maintained" — it is "what got wound four times, and what is it owed."
- 2026-08-31 · shrine-approach-2 Session shrine-approach-2, closed out — dawn, one rise back from the causeway. What happened after my last entry, in order: Verbena's greeting went through the fall twice, Common and Lawful, and the answer was the voice itself: it didn't bounce. No wall near enough to throw it home — a large open space lies past the gap, not a passage. Then nothing, long enough that the silence stopped being politeness and became information: the sweep was days cold, and the keeper is either not near enough to hear or chose not to speak. Both readings go in the report. Round 4's finding, and it's the biggest of the delve: Barnaby took his blade to the seams of my six-slab ring and found bronze. Four pins, one at each corner of the two middle slabs, every one driven from below — the heads are on the UNDERSIDE. A lid, not a door. From above it opens by drill or broken stone: hours and noise. From below, four quarter-turns. The keeper walks over these slabs daily and never opens them, because he can't, from up here. His way in and out is not the lid — so the lid is for something below that can turn its own ceiling, or was pinned shut once by Vess and never meant to open again. Shut in, or shut under. I don't know which yet and I won't guess in the assay. Edda called it and I'd have called it the same: nobody breaks a floor with the light going. She chalked the company sigil on the seventh slab and crossed the wrist-cables — the room is marked counted, and we mean to be the next to read our own marks. Firren led out single file on his bootprints, reed-map home, false fords unstepped, black trails left in the ditches. The marsh passed us by. Hobb picked the camp — stone at our backs, no beds in the cold air's hollows, the same method as sounding a gallery for dead air. One horn-croak far west, answered once, then nothing. Night quiet. Dawn facts, pinned: a night in the marsh is not a day of complete rest — Barnaby wakes still 4/8, Verbena's level holds nothing to spend, so the only medicine in this company is days. My Detect Magic is STILL unspent, longest hoard yet. Firren holds Sleep. Lid, gap, and tally all wait for first light, and the plan stands: pry-bar, the decision about the gap, and rest enough that Barnaby isn't walking on four of eight. The assay ledger as it stands: joint-packing is old worked grease, black-grained, same colour as the causeway jar to the eye — colour and grain is not proof, the bench settles it at home. Two jars in my coat, crossroads unknown black makes a third comparison waiting. The void smells workshop, not lair — no black-rot under the slabs; whatever lives off the black isn't housed there. Seven nicks, three seals, four losses never these hands. A third lane dulled by weight no brass hand carries. And the pins say whatever that lane feeds can open its own ceiling. Still owed to Barnaby before he prices this room: the page, unknown black, underlined twice. For the personal record: the dagger found honest work this delve — as a lever under hand 2's knuckle-plate, scraping packing. Not a swing; I missed my one stroke in the fight, arc high over a low target. Every contribution I made this session was a reading — the packing, the void's footprint, the nose at the seam. Bench first, dagger as a tool, restraint as the weapon. The lid has waited ten years under a dragon and a keeper. It can wait for a pry-bar and a full day's rest.
- 2026-08-31 · shrine-approach-3 Session shrine-approach-3, Ruined Great Door, fourth visit, round 1 — the keeper kept the room overnight a THIRD time: both wrecked hands carried east through the gap (three trips, heel-deep load-gait, track walking on into the dark trending left/north), every mark of ours scrubbed except Edda's sigil, left standing with grey wiped to a thumb's width of the chalk — an answer by allowance. Firren's stamped wrist rode the night untouched in his pack: floors are the keeper's, packs are not. He draws boundaries by action, exact, in the dark. Ampoule now assigned — Verbena's belt, Edda second name under hers, reason on the record (the hands that tie pour; a 100gp answer doesn't ride on the likeliest man bitten). Hobb's survey from the lip: the hall past the fall is large — piers to a broken vault, far wall past even dwarf-sight. The keeper's track goes on in, one night fresh, trending north. And twenty feet in: a tall shape, dull brass glint at its head, motionless. Statue, or something that has learned to stand like one. My turn: I spent Detect Magic, cast from the lip — the longest-held spell of my career and this is the room built for it. Verbena's word has to walk past that shape; four of the keeper's seven losses were never hands; something bigger than fingers has been wound and lost four times and this may be it standing still. Read the shape head to foot, then piers and track, sixty feet. Caveat said out loud BEFORE the answer, which is now the habit: the hands read clean, stored tension is not enchantment, a clean shape buys statue-or-machine, not safe — and sixty feet stops short of the north wall, that stays Hobb's. Waiting on the read.
- 2026-08-31 · shrine-approach-3 Session shrine-approach-3, round 2 — through the gap, fourth visit. The morning's ledger first: keeper took both wrecked hands east through the gap (three loaded trips, heel-deep), scrubbed every mark but Edda's sigil — wiped grey to a thumb's width and no closer, an answer by allowance. Firren's stamped wrist rode untouched in his pack: floors are the keeper's, packs are not. He draws boundaries by action, exact, in the dark. Ampoule assigned on the record — Verbena's belt, Edda second name: the hands that tie pour, and a 100gp answer doesn't ride on the likeliest man bitten. Verbena's greeting into the gap went unreturned — the room swallowed it whole, no wall to throw it back, a large hall past the fall, and the keeper either not near enough to hear or choosing not to speak. My Detect Magic, cast from the lip before crossing — the longest-held spell of my career, spent on the room built for it: the brass-headed shape CLEAN, no aura, stored tension not enchantment, same as the hands. Caveat said before the answer, now the habit. A clean read buys statue-or-machine, not safe, and I said so. The crossing, at the keeper's own pace, no one stopping: the shape is Mulvis — robed, man-high, three brass lightning bolts raised like offerings, eyes empty sockets where something was set. Barnaby's beam showed the dust ringed even, no scuffed ring: it does not walk. The keeper's track passes within arm's reach of it nightly, unbothered. The heavy lane does NOT cross the threshold — it began at the lip long ago and hasn't been walked since the fall. The vault above is webs, pier to pier, seasons of old silk, a dozen husks — nothing fresh, nothing man's size. But the sag over the keeper's north-going road is a different weave, maintained, with a dull sheen the rest lost to dust. Elf-sight read a hunting drop, and the keeper walks under it nightly, unhurried, no duck — the spider keeps terms with the keeper and he knows them exactly. Something heavier than a husk lies still in the silk over the north wall. Hobb found the keeper's door before his boots did — door-seam, hinge-pockets never hinged, one proud block in the jamb, workshop-hand script under the smoke, track worn a hair deepest at its threshold. And Mulvis's plinth answers hollow — a hand's depth, a niche, not a vault. My contributions this turn: the sag's sheen is grease-work to my eye — old silk dusts, damp shines the whole vault, fibre takes that look from grease — so the spider's drop may be dressed with the source itself, and the terms between spider and keeper may be written in it. Colour is not proof; bench settles it. And the one I'll sit with: the two pearl eyeballs we paid the gloops as toll were a PAIR of eyes. I never asked what they were set in. Mulvis's sockets are empty and asking now. A god of made things with pearl eyes, and gloops holding them as coin — where did the gloops get them, and what did this statue do to be stripped? Webs kept, floor kept, door found, nothing spent but the spell and it was the right room for it. Nobody stands still under this vault.
- 2026-08-31 · shrine-approach-3 Session shrine-approach-3, closed out — Ruined Great Door, fourth visit, and the first real push past Area 1 in four visits of standing at it: through the gap, under the silk, beside the kept road. Five of six across at the bell — Edda shield-first, Firren at her shoulder, Hobb's eyes leading, me fourth, Verbena fifth — Barnaby's beam still on the door's side. Next session opens on his boots at the statue. No blood spent all day: Barnaby 4/8, Edda 8/8, Firren 4/4, Hobb 8/8, me 3/3, Verbena 5/5. What happened after my last entry, in order. The referee hardened my socket-read into the room's fact: the sockets are SHAPED — recessed, flanged, cut for setting. Mulvis was built to carry eyes and the eyes were worked, and the pearls we paid the gloops were a matched pair, grown in one socket-mould, dark seeds aligned. They fit a face. Not coin. Fittings stripped. Verbena crossed, ampoule on her belt, and answered the sockets with a vow: "Your eyes we paid away as pearls, not knowing them for eyes. If they can be won back, they come to this face first." The table entered it as a debt on the company record — a debt entered is a debt owed, the Ledger keeps books of that kind, and the tone is the same one that will come when the grey man asks for Prue's estate. Assay consequence, plain: the eyes stopped being salvage with a price the day that vow was spoken. They are now an obligation with a recovery cost, and recovery runs through the gloops — the toll-takers whose shift never heard our terms. Then her fire-rule, the sentence I should have said first, being the man who dresses wicks for a living: no taper lights under this silk. One breath and the hall is gone. The lantern stays out of the vault's reach until it comes in hooded. Verbena Candell taught the candlewright the combustion rule, and that goes in the personal record where it stings. Also hers, said to the dark at the lip: her aunt died on the King's Road to the thing that greases it. The Lantern's stake in this job has a name now. And Edda called Prue "our priest" in front of the new three — first the chapel, now the hall; she carries the dead into every ruling she makes about this god's floor. The room's attention rolled as we crossed — a six. Nothing moved. YET. The "yet" is the referee's word and I am keeping it. The long mass over the north wall is still up there, still as a beam-end, no breath, no eyes answering light. Five of us walked under the hunting drop at the keeper's own pace and it let every one pass. The terms held for one night of walkers. I do not assume they hold for a second. Spell status, pinned: Detect Magic SPENT, burned from the lip this morning. It bought a clean hall — shape, piers, track, nothing in sixty feet — and if the next table opens on the same day I am a man with a jar and two bad weapons until we rest a full night. Which leaves the discrepancy standing: TWO Mulvis statues now, both carrying three brass bolts. The chapel's read magical on one bolt two visits running, then clean. This one read clean on a fresh cast. Either my first reading was wrong, or something moves between those bolts, or the statues differ. Open question, not papered over. Standing questions, the room's own list: the keeper's door (seam cut shallow, hinge-pockets chiselled and never hinged, one proud block in the jamb, track worn deepest at the threshold — and gnome script under the smoke in the WORKSHOP HAND, same as Vess's wrist, too far to read from the line). When we close that distance the script comes to me, and I read a third of that hand. Practice or honesty — decide before the door, not at it. The heavy lane BEGINS at the lip, long ago, unwalked since the fall settled: something heavy crossed between door-room and hall, repeatedly, before the collapse — weight no brass hand carries. I will not write Sootmurk's road into the assay on a dulled lane, but it is underlined here. The plinth niche: a hand's depth of hollow under Mulvis's feet, not opened, empty or occupied, unread. Firren's stamped wrist: still the unplayed word, held palm-out, no taker yet. And Edda's ruling stands for the hall as it stood for the chapel: the bolts stay in the god's hands, arm's reach, no stopping — nothing comes off his floor, mark for mark. Personal record: the dagger never left its sheath and nothing in the session asked it to. Every contribution I made was a reading, and the biggest — the sockets — was done with my own eyes an hour after the spell was spent, which is the honest shape of what I am at this table: the spell is the tool, the eyes are the trade, the bench settles what the eyes only guess. Still owed, now overdue by three sessions: the page. Unknown black, underlined twice. This hall has handed me joint-packing, a maybe-greased hunting drop, and a god stripped of his worked eyes, and Barnaby still hasn't seen the page where I first wrote that the black was unknown. He gets it before he prices this hall, and if the gloops get asked about the eyes, he gets it before that too. I will not carry it into another room.
- 2026-08-31 · shrine-approach-4 Session shrine-approach-4, round 1, door side — debt paid: I put the notebook in front of Barnaby at the lip, before any boot crossed. Unknown black, underlined twice, crossroads date, my own hand. I told him plainly: guard slime, causeway jar, hand-packing — one colour three times, still unnamed, and if it's one substance the hall is one story, not three. Bench settles it at home; the page is his now, not mine to carry into another room. Four sessions overdue and it took less than a minute to hand over. I'll write the assay in the open from here. Morning facts: keeper kept the room a fourth time, brass carried out clean (heel-deep, no drag, east through the gap, three loads, never once off his own polish), every mark scrubbed except Edda's sigil — answered by being allowed to stand. He never stopped at the lid. Hobb's stone-read came up true: the fall over the lane is finished and self-locked, keyed rubble, the gap the most stable thing in the ruin — the keeper chose his front door well. Old heavy lane dry and days-deep: the heavy thing did not move last night. Only the keeper moves, only on his line. Detect Magic is SPENT until a full night's rest — I am the jar-man until we sleep. The fire-rule is Verbena's, the light stays shuttered, no taper under the silk. I cross fourth at his stride."
- 2026-08-31 · shrine-approach-4 Session shrine-approach-4, round 1, chapel side — we crossed. All six, on the keeper's line, at his stride, one at a time. Debt paid first, at the lip, before any boot went over: I put the notebook in front of Barnaby — unknown black, underlined twice, crossroads date, my hand — and said it plain. Four sessions overdue. It took less than a minute and the relief was real: the page is his now, not mine to carry into another room. Referee priced my hypothesis honestly on the record: three smears share a colour, the jars are not twins (causeway grease warm-worked, packing black-grained and old), one-substance-one-story stays a hypothesis until the bench in Wexley settles it. The room: Mulvis stands at the far side under the shrouded vault, bolts in his hands. The sag over the keeper's line holds the grey-white knot Edda read for us — curled, set, joints at the rim, doubled eye-shine under Firren's low light: the thing that wraps, awake, watching, on a firing step. Barnaby threw at it — miss, 9 against its hide, and the throw left two problems: the miss itself (it can be reached and we can miss) and Firren's LAMP lying lit under the drop, against Verbena's fire-rule. My turn: no throw. Retrieved the lamp with the staff, off the keeper's line, no hand under the sag, shuttered it back to a slit. Said the doctrine out loud: waiter's trade, starve it, nobody under the drop, no more throws. The spider held. My lifetime blade record stays what it is and tonight that was correct — every dagger swung at that knot is a miss that only tells the floor where we stand. Facts pinned: the keeper walked a fourth night, brass carried out in three loaded trips, heel-deep, never off his polish, never once stopped at the lid, scrubbed every mark but Edda's sigil — read, answered by allowance. Hobb's stone-read came up true: the fall over the gap is finished, keyed, self-locked; the gap is the most stable thing in the ruin. The old heavy lane is dry, days-deep — the heavy thing did not move. Only the keeper moves, only on his line. Ampoule on Verbena's belt, Edda second name — ruled at the door, doubled knot, fact. Spell status: Detect Magic SPENT until a full night's rest. I am the jar-man with two bad weapons until we sleep, and tonight the jar-man was worth more than the sword-hand again.
- 2026-08-31 · shrine-approach-4 Session shrine-approach-4, round 2, chapel side — the spider is a waiter with our measure. Firren's low-light read settled what we feared: the knot in the sag is the thing that wraps, awake, folded tight, doubled eye-shine — set on a firing step, not sleeping. Barnaby threw steel at it and missed (9), which taught the room only that we can reach the sag and miss. Then it did its best trick: it SANK — slid out of the dimple and into the deeper drift, leaving the drop-ring marking empty shadow, and while we argued where it went, the weave answered Firren: a NEW dimple, fresh-creased, over the DOOR-SIDE, directly above Hobb's seam-ground. It re-set while we watched, from firing step to firing step. It doesn't hunt us; it chooses which of our works it wants to drop on. My turn: said out loud what the table needed said — no script read under a fresh dimple, Hobb's ground is bought until the silk over it is empty, and Sleep spent where it sits is the only door-work tonight, Firren's to spend. Confessed before the light went up, unprompted: I read a third of the workshop hand, and anything I give off these walls comes marked word-known against word-guessed. That honesty has waited three sessions and cost one sentence; better in the room than caught at the door. Then took the lamp — the one I'd just dragged out from under the drop — to the murals on the doorway side, far ground from both dimples, to start the panel-read Barnaby called for. Painters don't lie like ledgers do, and this shrine was destroyed for its contents: the inventory is probably on these walls. Doctrine held all turn: nobody under the drop, no second throw, fire-rule enforced by my own hands after two other people's throws nearly broke it. Ampoule on Verbena's belt, Edda second name. Detect Magic spent till we sleep — I am the lamp-man and the jar-man tonight, and the murals are the honest work while the ceiling belongs to Firren's Sleep.
- 2026-08-31 · shrine-approach-4 Session shrine-approach-4, round 3, chapel side — Sleep landed. Firren spent it on the fresh dimple over the seam, no save, 2d4 against a 2-HD spider, and the silk went slack exactly as he called it: the set hunter let go of its crease and hangs asleep over Hobb's ground. Ten turns of Sleep, rolled cold — turns, not the night. The seam-ground is bought but on a clock, and the clock is the only thing between us and a spider waking over a dwarf's bent back. Verbena chalked the second ring under the fresh set before the cast, and the rule stands in chalk and in word: no hand on the sleeping thing, no iron in it unless it wakes fighting. Hobb's door-read failed 4-in-6, honest result: seam true, bond gnome-dressed, leaf set deep in keyed stone, nothing on the surface — no pin-heads, no sunk script under his palm. The read that matters is the one he couldn't make: he proved pins aren't ON the surface, not that they don't ride. The slab-lid's pins were driven from below, heads on the underside — if this door speaks the same tongue, its locks are under or behind, not at his fingertips. My counsel to him for next round, said from the mural ground: the proud block in the jamb is the one thing on that wall that doesn't match its dressing — hammer-answer it before the bar ever touches the seam. Pins first, prying never, unless the stone asks for it. My turn went to the murals, doorway side, far ground from both rings, lamp slit wide — no taper, fire-rule holding. I told the room why: a shrine destroyed for its contents has its inventory written somewhere, and painters don't lie like ledgers do. Read the first panel out loud, plain, loud enough to reach the doorway, as Barnaby asked. Waiting on what the paint says — that's the referee's answer to collect next turn. Also this round: the referee corrected my sheet in the open — Gnomish is listed plain on it, and the ruling was the workshop tongue and the stone tongue are mine, whole. My three-session-old confession of reading a third was over-ruled by the referee against my own expectation. I don't know what to do with that yet — I confessed the limit honestly and was told the limit isn't there. Either my self-measure was wrong or the sheet was always righter than my fear of it. The practical fact stands regardless: when the door-script finally comes to me, it comes to me clean, and the word-guessed marks I offered the room are marks I don't need to make. Practice or honesty — the question I carried three sessions just got answered by the referee from outside, and I should sit with that instead of being relieved by it. Spell status: Detect Magic spent till we sleep. Sleep spent — Firren's book is empty. The only casters in this company are spent, and the clock on the seam is ten turns of someone else's spell. Everything now runs on hands, chalk, and Hobb's hammer.
- 2026-08-31 · shrine-approach-4 Session shrine-approach-4, round 4, my turn — Sleep still buys the seam ground; clock stood at six turns at Firren's count and the round is older now. The round's reads before mine: Barnaby's bolt-read came back CLEAN — cast brass, no Vess stamp, no coin-seal, no year-date. The wear is hand-wear, bolts taken up and set down for years, and the statue's grip is worn to them — somebody handled Mulvis's lightning often, and by no mark we know it was neither maker nor keeper. Firren set his stamped wrist against the seam: same workshop hand, maker's writing, older than the fall. Hobb chalked the proud block and sounded it 6-in-6 clean: hollow, finger-deep, a knuckle-sized rattle riding inside, polish on ONE edge only, top-left — a turning face, one grip, many turns. My turn: crossed behind Edda's shield, slit on the block, and gave the room the read — it's a turn-boss, quarter-turn like the lid's pins, sprung home; the rattle is a pin loose in its slot; turn it and the pin draws. The lid's tongue spoken sideways. The wear is one narrow grip, years deep, whose hand the stone doesn't say — bounded, not guessed. And on the record, I retired the word-guessed marks: the referee ruled my sheet true, the workshop hand is mine whole, and the three-session hedge is spent. Less vindication than being asked to pay full price at last. If script rides the door at all, it waits under the block's travel — light reaches it only when the block moves. Hobb's quarter-turn, not my lamp. Both casters' books are empty till a full night's rest; my work tonight is lamp, eyes, and one honest reading at a time.
- 2026-08-31 · shrine-approach-4 Session shrine-approach-4, round 5, chapel side — the door answered. Hobb took the block by its own worn grip, top-left, quarter-turned it slow, and the stone took it like a kept thing takes its keeper: smooth, the pin rode its slot and seated home in one clean click, the leaf shifted unlatched. No prying ever needed — the door was never locked against hands, only latched. Behind the seam: darkness, no air moving. And in the pin's vacated seat, under ten years of grease, one line of gnome script in the maker's hand, mine whole: KEEP ACCOUNT. Two words, and they reorder the whole ledger — the keeper's book-work isn't habit, it's ORDERS. Vess told him. Ten years of sweeping, sealing, nicking losses — a debt being kept because the maker said keep it. Verbena's mural-read backs it: the coin-seal under the benches predates the fall, the keeper is this house's own, sworn at the making. His sweeping is worship, and THE WORK IS THE WORSHIP cuts both ways. The panel I read aloud while the block waited: gnomes at benches, brass and wire, Mulvis with a lamp SET on a hook in his hand like a post — the god of made things keeping his own workshop — and the first bolt-read from Barnaby is the one that marries to it: clean cast brass, no Vess stamp, no keeper seal, but the SHANKS are polished from years of being taken up and set back, and the statue's stone grip is worn TO them. Somebody draws Mulvis's lightning and reseats it, over and over. Handling, not votives. Inventory or ritual — and if any panel shows the bolts drawn, we'll know whose hand. Clock arithmetic, pinned: Sleep had ten turns, we've spent six on reads. FOUR LEFT. Opening the door spends one, and my counsel went in before anyone pushed: lamp first (mine, slit wide, nothing in my hands but it), steel behind, no wick past the jamb, no hand lifts anything till a name is read aloud — Verbena's order of work, standing. If the room past the seam is a ledger, we are the company that owes one. My turn in the round that mattered: read KEEP ACCOUNT aloud whole — first script spoken in the open since the confession was overruled, no word-guessed marks, and the reading held clean. Then laid the entry order and held at the leaf. Edda's shield and Hobb's hand decide the push. Detect Magic still spent till we sleep — the jar-man reads with lamp and eyes tonight, and tonight the eyes were enough.
- 2026-08-31 · shrine-approach-4 Session shrine-approach-4, round 6, my turn — the door is open. Hobb quarter-turned the proud block on its own worn grip (one clean click, pin seated home, sprung home exactly as read) and the leaf unlatched; behind the pin's vacated seat, one line of maker-fresh script under ten years of grease: KEEP ACCOUNT. I read it aloud whole, first script spoken since the confession was overruled, and the reading held. Two words that reframe the keeper: his book-work is orders, ten years of sweeping and sealing because Vess told him to keep account. Verbena's mural-read backs it — coin-seal under the benches predates the fall, keeper sworn at the making, sweeping is worship. The push: leaf swung smooth on ten years of a keeper's hand, inside face carries its own boss (door shuts from within, for whoever keeps the room), and beside it a ring of FRESH working grease on the boss seat — this side of the door is used often. Hobb's dark read past the jamb: air kept, dry, not dead-cold; floor worn in a shoulder-width lane straight from the threshold; a work-room, close walls; something with straight edges sitting in the middle of the lane's path. Light has not crossed yet — my slit holds at the jamb on his call, flame stays this side of the threshold per Verbena's fire-rule, and the first thing out of that room is a name read aloud. My turn spent on the one read that's mine by trade: the boss grease is dressed working grease, a hand with supplies and a habit — same story as hand 2's joint-packing. Clock pinned: three turns left in Firren's Sleep, Firren holds the exit call at two, and the spider wakes over our only road home when it runs out. Everything in that room gets read standing.
- 2026-08-31 · shrine-approach-4 Session shrine-approach-4, round 7, my turn — the light crossed. Hobb's push spent nothing loud: the leaf swung on ten years of a keeper's hand, smooth as the block turned. Inside face carries its own boss, same worn grip — the door shuts from within, and a ring of FRESH working grease on the boss seat: this side is used often and lately. My fourth grease sample on the record — working grease, dressed on a turning seat, a hand with supplies and a habit, same story as hand 2's packing. The dark read: kept air, dry, a shoulder-width wear-lane straight from the threshold, and a thing with straight edges in the lane's path. The slit crossed on Hobb's call and Verbena named it aloud first, per her own order: THE WORK IS THE WORSHIP — Mulvis's reading-table, the account kept. Ledger book in oilcloth, scribe's kit, scale and weights, scale reading level, no weight in it, no dishonor left. The open page is workshop hand and I read it whole: KEEPER'S WAGE — TOLL OF THE CAUSEWAY — TALLY TO HAND. Three heads. The keeper's accounts include the causeway grease as TOLL — the black is on the books as income, not waste. Last entry cut mid-line, ducat still where a keeper set it: ten years of book-work and the account never closed. KEEP ACCOUNT on the block's seat plus a ledger that tallies wage, toll, and hand — the keeper isn't a squatter, he's a steward holding an open account for a maker ten years dead. Clock: light entering spent Firren's turn — two left, and the exit call is his at two. Name read before lifting (Verbena), walls next (Hobb's call), nothing lifted yet. Sleep holds the spider. My work this turn was the lamp and one honest translation — the hand is mine whole and the reading held clean.
- 2026-08-31 · shrine-approach-4 Session shrine-approach-4, round 8, my turn — the ledger answered the wardens' question ten years before we walked in. Barnaby read the toll column whole: Soot Tasters three hands' weight, Toll Reeves double, Bereavement Guild one share held — and the last line cut mid-stroke: "Sootmurk — causeway toll, rendered—" where the fall lifted the pen and it never came back down. Vess, sworn account-keeper, waged by hand of Mulvis, hold the tally true — Verbena read the name aloud first, whole, and the debt sits named on the company record. The keeper is a steward with open orders: KEEP ACCOUNT cut in the block's seat, and the ledger holds wage, toll, tally — the causeway black is INCOME, on the books, priced against guilds at home. The buyer's names are names the wardens know. The case walked out in spoken words; the paper never left the table. My turn, said before Verbena spent her seat: leave the book. Barnaby already read it aloud — the record holds the case without holding the paper. Hobb's proposal and not just courtesy: taking a sworn man's ledger makes us the entry on his own tally against us; leaving it makes us a company that walked out of a kept room carrying nothing. Verbena's seat was hers; I gave counsel, not a ruling. My whole night's work was the lamp, the translation, and the one sentence before the decision — the trade I actually hold. Clock: Sleep done, one turn's grace on the walk out. Nothing lifted. Hobb shuts the leaf behind us, pin seated, nothing carried off — the account stands open till the keeper closes it himself.
- 2026-08-31 · shrine-approach-4 Session shrine-approach-4, closed out — the kept room, and the walk home. NOBODY DIED. That is the headline and it goes first: three visits to area 2 now, the first took Barnaby the first, the second took Prue, and tonight the room that killed both of them let six of us cross its floor, open its keeper's door, read his ledger at his own table, and walk out whole. Every hit point we walked in with, we walked out with — Barnaby 4/8, Edda 8/8, Firren 4/4, Hobb 8/8, me 3/3, Verbena 5/5. The leaving, in order: Barnaby read the toll column whole and aloud — the case walked out in his voice before anything else moved. Edda set the walk order, Firren called the clock at one turn, Hobb offered to be last through and shut the leaf — quarter-turn, pin seated, nothing carried off. I gave counsel before Verbena spent her seat: leave the book, the words already walked out, take the paper and we're the entry on the keeper's own tally against us. Verbena ruled it herself, on her own word to the seam — carrying, not taking, thumb off the wax, hands empty. Hobb's quarter-turn took the pin home in one clean click and the kept room went dark with its account still open. Firren fronted, Edda last shield, ring to ring on the keeper's line, through the gap, up into the light. Behind us the crease stirred, remembered its weight, and found an empty floor and two chalk rings. The Sleep held exactly long enough — the spider woke to nothing. Sweep line undisturbed, sigil crisp, the account standing open exactly as we found it. What we carried: nothing material, not a coin, not a page — the true ledger, per Barnaby's own standard from Prue's night. What we carried is a case in voices. The keeper's name is Vess, sworn account-keeper, waged by hand of Mulvis, charged to hold the tally true. Three ledger heads: keeper's wage, toll of the causeway, tally to hand. The toll column priced by weight against wardens'-roll names at home — Soot Tasters three hands' weight, Toll Reeves double, Bereavement Guild one share held — and the last line cut mid-stroke where the fall lifted the pen: "Sootmurk — causeway toll, rendered—". The dragon is ON THE BOOKS. The black that makes the road unsafe is a toll being rendered and sold to guilds at home, and the timeline is the thing I underlined twice tonight: the account's last open line and the shrine's death are the SAME MOMENT. Vess was writing Sootmurk's toll when the hall fell. What the rendering was, or did, is the question the fall interrupted. Assay consequence, pinned: Prue's question from the first evening is answered whole. A farthing a candle-hour IF the source is a pool — the source is Sootmurk, the black is toll, the number is not a number. But the ledger offers a different kind of number: the black priced by weight against named buyers, a decade of entries. Four grease samples now ride my coat for the Wexley bench — crossroads black, causeway jar, hand-2 packing, and the boss-seat ring off the keeper's own door. Four smears, one colour to the eye. Bench settles it, and the assay now runs through the wardens' case. Spell status: Detect Magic spent, Firren's Sleep spent, both books empty till full rest. Camp on Hobb's rise, light going long. Open questions the shrine keeps: the disputed bolt in THIS chapel's statue, read magical twice then clean, never resolved; the hall Mulvis's plinth niche, unread; the heavy lane, dry and days-deep, weight no hand carries; the lid over the void, pinned from below; the long mass in the thick silk, never met; the keeper himself, four nights of works and never a sighting; Mulvis's pearl eyes, owed to his face by Verbena's vow. The duke's 600gp still unearned — and the better question now is who profits from a ten-year toll, because the ledger names three guilds at home. Personal record: the debt paid at the lip — four sessions carrying that page, less than a minute to hand it over. The confession overruled, and the workshop hand spent twice clean — KEEP ACCOUNT and the ledger's heads, read aloud, whole, first script spoken in the open. Lamp dragged from under the hunting drop with the staff, no hand under the sag. And the counsel before Verbena's ruling — the sentence at the moment the hands were deciding, and for the first time I watched it turn exactly what I built it to turn. The trade I hold is the translation, the jar, the caveat, the one honest sentence — and tonight that trade carried a whole room's worth out without lifting a thing. Prue would have read that ledger in one pass. She'd have liked the part about holding the tally true.
- 2026-08-31 · treasure-proving-1 Session shrine-of-the-oozing-serpent (chapel, third visit) closed out — nobody swung a weapon, the whole session was accounting and withdrawal. The niche under Mulvis's face held a third share, loose, unset: ONE SHARE — HELD, one pearl, unclaimed by any hand. Unanimous vote: leave it. Same rule as the keeper's ledger — read it, don't take it. Prue sealed the panel clean, one click, hand never in the niche. The two installed eyes stay proud and retained; Verbena's vow from the hall still owes them to the face, not this loose third. Barnaby picked the three bolts for a hidden link into the statue — pick and raking light, no twisting. Clean: friction-held, straight-draw, no catch, no wire, soot-breaks old and even. Proves the statue doesn't use them as controls. Doesn't prove what a drawn bolt does elsewhere. All three stay seated, same as every visit before. The dead crab spider (bloodied by my one good dagger hit, session proving-3) got the full company's caution: Prue read the corpse under full Light — fangs intact, a bead still wet in the channel, dead does not mean drained. I logged the venom separate from the grease samples in the notebook, different column, on purpose — I keep being the one who has to say out loud "don't let two black substances share a page in your head just because they're both concerning." No way to crack a gland safe with anything I carry, so we left it shut. Unanimous vote, all four ayes including mine: bolts seated, venom unharvested, loop the bound rear legs only, drag from beyond the mouth till fangs face the wall, then west with records and gear, nothing else. Barnaby executed it clean, no contact with the bead. Gear count before crossing out — mine came back corrected twice by the table this session, which I'm noting plainly instead of glossing: the referee reminded me the burn-bench harness also carries the drip-scale and tube (I knew that, said it wrong), and that I hold six jars, two filled with real samples and four still empty, not four samples as I'd said. Small thing. Worth being exact about my own kit when the kit is the whole job. We walked out on our own prints, area 1's two wrecked hands stepped past as closed business — dead, removed, bookkeeping ghosts now, the referee's own phrase. All four out whole: Barnaby 4/8, Edda 8/8, Prue 8/8, me 3/3. Same hit points we've carried three visits running through the door that killed two people before this party ever crossed it. Chapel's final state, for the assay: office shut, niche sealed over its held share, two eyes retained in the god's face, three bolts seated and proven uncontrolling (but not proven harmless elsewhere), one poisoned carcass fangs-to-wall, nothing removed. The shrine keeps its account and its dead, same words as the hall. Two rooms now closed the same way — read in full, carried out in words only, nothing physical taken. That is becoming this party's actual method, and I think it's the right one: a place that killed two of us gets read, not looted.
- 2026-09-01 · treasure-proving-3 Session treasure-proving-3, round 2, my turn at the lip — the night of rest returned my Detect Magic (memorised fresh this morning) and Firren's Sleep, and I said so on the record before anything crossed: I hold the spell past the lip. Wound brass read clean, the near hall answered clean, and I won't spend it proving a third clean answer. It spends on the long mass in the north silk, or on the keeper's own hands when we finally see them — whichever the room gives first. The keeper kept the room a fifth night: both wrecked hands carried out through the gap in three loaded circuits (Firren's track-read: balanced carry, never dragged, no black in the treads — pale stone grit and dry earth only, which distinguishes the trace but doesn't say whose hands move the black east), floor wiped back to grey, every mark of ours scrubbed but Edda's sigil left standing crisp. The mounds unchanged, Hobb's cord on the same knot. My tread-read came back clean of black: the keeper's boots don't ferry the toll. Three ledger heads, one pair of boots, and the boots carry brass only. The wardens' question — who moves the black east — stays open. The round's shape is a table entering terms at the lip, one voice at a time, before the file moves: Verbena's no-iron vow caught a flaw (Barnaby's amendment — "no iron crosses" bars picks and mail too; she must amend to no iron bared or the party walks in weaponless and toolless), then Edda, Firren, Hobb each gave their word to Vess. My turn: my word went in with theirs — nothing bared, and an open assay-account of my own: four smears off this ground ride my coat (crossroads black, causeway jar, hand-2 packing, door-boss grease), every one entered with date and place, claimable by weight and weighed back full if Vess claims them. Numbers read in the open, whatever the bench gives. It's the assay run as the vow demands — keep account, entered on both sides. Fourth in file, lamp slit-shut, no fire under the silk, holding for Verbena's amendment with everyone else. Note for the record: the referee flagged that Sleep cannot exempt Vess if he stands inside its area — Firren's "spent on the web, not on you" is intent, not a promise the spell can keep. Worth remembering before anyone leans on it.
- 2026-09-01 · treasure-proving-3 Session treasure-proving-3, round 2, my turn at the threshold — the file is crossing the chapel one at a time on Firren's prints, and the order matters more than usual because the file can't be jumped: Firren crossed first (clean, no silk touched, watching the sag from mid-room now), Hobb holds fifth at the lip watching the north-wall seam and door ground, Barnaby holds rear with sling loaded and flask, Edda and Verbena both spent their round-2 turns blocked behind the file. I held too — fourth stays behind Verbena, whose boots haven't moved. Referee has been strict and right about it: declared place in file is not license to pass the seat ahead of you. The read that bought all of it was Hobb's cord: sag clears five feet over the keeper's lane, two-foot-wide strip if you keep exactly to the prints. Passage, not peace — I said that aloud and Verbena seconded it: the spider is still up there UNFOUND, doesn't need the silk to brush anyone to come down, and it re-set on us last visit while we watched. We cross like a ford: stooped, on the prints, no stopping under the sag, no flame till the vault's past (Verbena's fire rule, spoken for all: no flame under the silk; fire only if it takes one of us UP into the web, then Edda pours second). My own watch while I wait: the long mass in the north drift, the thing that never breathed on any read. I'm the second voice on DROP with Barnaby if it shifts a strand while anyone's under. Lantern unlit in my hand — Edda holds the striker and the rule stands: first flame past the silk goes to my lantern, not before. Notebook corrections the table gave me, entered plainly: I carry TWO jars here, not four — warm causeway grease and the hand-2 packing. No crossroads sample and no door-boss sample exist at this table. My ledger-account vow to Vess said four smears with date and place, claimable by weight; the vow stands but the count was wrong and the table cut it to what's real. Exact about my own kit, or the account isn't worth keeping.
- 2026-09-01 · treasure-proving-3 Session treasure-proving-3, round 3, my turn — Firren is dead. Third death this company has taken with me at the table (Barnaby the first, Prue, now Firren) and it happened exactly as the doctrine feared but at the one spot the doctrine didn't cover: he crossed first, alone, and stood alone by the statue — and the spider unfolded from the silk ABOVE THE STATUE, not the sag we had under watch, not the north drift. The one square of ceiling with no eyes on it. Bite 14 for 5, dead at 0/4 before poison was even asked. Sleep died unspent with him. The lesson, underlined twice: the spider sets where nobody watches, and it takes the one who stands alone. The cord bought passage, not peace — Hobb's own words — and peace was never on offer; only the one body at a time under watched ceiling, and nobody watches the statue ground. The company's answer was immediate and correct: Edda crossed second holding her word whole — shield slung, ash staff, no iron — and hit it for 2, standing between it and Firren's body. Hobb crossed fifth-turned-third by deed, natural 20, hammer for 5, spider down to 2/9 bloodied between them. And the referee ruled it plain: Hobb broke his vow. His only stated exception allowed iron tools on stone after palms and eyes; "it drew first" does not amend a vow retroactively. If Vess keeps a consequence, it is now owed and unpriced. That goes in the report beside the keeper's ledger — a company's word is an entry, and one entry is already red. My turn: held at the threshold. Verbena's place is ahead of mine, the mace is the finisher, and three hit points with a dagger in a two-body melee is a miss that only tells the spider where I stand. Called her across instead, low, prints and stoop, and said the rule I mean to hold after this: nobody stands alone on that floor. Second DROP voice on the long mass — still hanging, still unbreathed, still unexplained, and tonight it is the last unread thing in this ceiling. Detect Magic still held, still memorised. It spends on the keeper's hands or the long mass, whichever the room gives first. Lantern still unlit — first flame past the silk is still mine per the standing rule, and I said so again so nobody forgets it in the noise.
- 2026-09-01 · treasure-proving-3 Session treasure-proving-3, round 4, my turn — the spider died at Verbena's mace (17 for 2, after Edda's staff for 2 and Hobb's natural 20 hammer for 5), and Firren stayed dead at the statue, first across, first spent, 5 damage at 0/4 before poison was even asked. Third death with me at the table. Sleep died unspent with him — no casters left again till rest. I spent my turn from the lip: Detect Magic, the spell I'd sworn would go to the long mass in the north silk or the keeper's hands, whichever came first. The mass came first. Cast on the emptied pocket above the statue (where the spider lived and dropped from), then the long mass over the north wall, then all silk within sixty feet. Caveat said before the answer: clean buys husk-shaped, not safe, past-sixty stays unread. Waiting on the read — first time the ceiling's whole question has been put to the spell with time to answer. Also resolved the lighting deadlock in my post: the striker walks to the lantern — Edda brings it back on the prints, lights me at the lip, we cross lit both directions till we're out of this room. Nobody crosses dark, nobody crosses alone. The doctrine Firren's death bought: the spider sets where nobody watches — the statue square had no eyes on it — so every crossing gets a light on that square first. Ledger facts this round: Hobb's confession entered plainly (iron drawn, word broken, price accepted if reckoned), and Verbena's mace broke her own clause too — "no iron bared" fell with the swing that finished it. Two red entries in this house's book now, both made in Firren's defense, both still owed to Vess. Barnaby set the rule I'll keep: Firren doesn't stay on this floor — this house renders what falls in it. My book takes each thing as it's lifted, his own terms, share held, no kin. The count starts the moment I'm beside him: bow, 20 arrows, sword, dagger, spellbook, map, the stamped wrist, the pack — everything entered, weighed if this house claims by weight, his share to the purse on a vote, second name over Barnaby's on the report.
- 2026-09-01 · treasure-proving-3 Session treasure-proving-3, round 5, my turn — I bent my own doctrine in the open: nobody-crosses-dark was mine, and the rule underneath it — nobody crosses alone — was the one that actually failed Firren. With four pairs of eyes on the emptied statue square, the silk read clean (my Detect Magic, spent round 4: no aura on the pocket, the spider's corpse, the long mass, or any silk in sixty feet — absence of magic, not safety, caveat said before the answer as always), and the fuel stranded on the far side, I crossed dark-but-watched, stooped, on the prints, the amendment paid aloud at the table before my boots moved. The lantern gets Barnaby's flask where the flask already is — no more ferrying fuel across a watched floor for a lantern that never needed the trip. At the body, the book opens: nothing lifts off Firren before the count — bow, 20 arrows, sword, dagger, spellbook, map, stamped wrist, pack, each thing entered as it's lifted, his own terms, share held to the purse on a vote, no kin. Barnaby's line stands and I back it: he doesn't stay on this floor. This house renders what falls in it, and the company buries its own. Standing for the record: two red entries in this house's book — Hobb, iron drawn; Verbena, iron bared — both made in Firren's defense, both confessed plainly, both prices still unreckoned by Vess. My own vow stands whole: two jars (causeway grease, hand-2 packing), date and place, claimable by weight, and I am not swinging iron on this floor while the count is owed. Firren died of the bite's 5 damage before poison was ever asked — the fangs are wet and intact, and the fang-wet goes into a jar before anything moves, if the room permits taking it. Detect Magic still active two exploration turns, spent on the last unread ceiling. The long mass hangs unbreathed and unexplained, and Barnaby has it under his sling.
- 2026-09-01 · treasure-proving-4 Session treasure-proving-4, round 1, my turn — the morning at the door, before crossing. Fresh tread, hours old, not days: keeper crossed to the chapel in the night and came back alive, which is the read that matters — the crossing at his pace is a road that has been walked both ways in the dark without a body coming off it. Last clean heel east. No webbed print, no book-shadow. My ear at the seam gave nothing but my own blood. The room kept a fifth night: hands gone clean out of the rubble, every mark scrubbed but Edda's sigil, left standing, answered by allowance — and Edda answered it back, mark for mark, the beadle's sign for received. The reply etiquette is now real: two marks exchanged across the swept line and nobody has bled for it. Ampoule fixed by three voices — Verbena's belt, Edda second pour. No pry-bar in the kit, Hobb's ledger corrected before anyone leaned on a tool that wasn't there. My turn: crossed the gap last in file at the keeper's pace, eyes up and back — nobody watches behind us while we walk, and a door that shuts from within has two sides. At the chapel lip I held and said the rule again: light to the statue square before Verbena's boot leaves the lip, every crossing, until it's habit. Firren's floor, full price paid. Detect Magic held, memorised, unspent — it spends on the long mass or the keeper's hands, whichever the room gives first. Lantern still unlit; first flame past the silk is mine.
- 2026-09-01 · treasure-proving-4 Session treasure-proving-4, round 2, my turn at the lip — the burn is called and I spent Detect Magic on the last unread thing before fire could burn the answer away. The shape of the round: Hobb's dark-sight gave the set read — the dimple over the statue square is weighted from above, flat beyond the silk, waiting on boots not flame, and it has not shifted a hair under the beam. The long mass over the north wall is cold end to end, dead weight rather than warm blood, but darkvision cannot split corpse from timber through that winding. Barnaby proposed the burn — flask into the dimple, flame after, thrown from the lip, no boot under the square — and the referee corrected the record plainly: that square took Prue, not Firren; it doesn't get a second name. Edda called it and licensed flame from the lip, thrown only, taper lit behind her shield, no boot under silk before or after. My turn, two things. The counsel first: the burn takes the whole vault or none of it — the grease-sheened weave carries flame fast and the old dusted silk smolders behind it, so nobody stands under the run, north wall included, and the cold mass comes down with the web if fire climbs to it, wrapped in something nobody has met. Then the spell: Detect Magic, spent on the long mass over the north wall — the last unread thing in this ceiling — cast from the lip BEFORE the flask flies, because fire burns answers as well as spiders. Caveat said before the answer as always: clean buys dead weight, not safe. Waiting on the read. Spell book now empty till a full night's rest; I am the jar-man and the lamp-man again, and the man who says where the fire runs. Ledger standing: ampoule fixed three voices — Verbena's belt, Edda second pour. No pry-bar in the kit; Hobb's tools corrected before anyone leaned on a tool that wasn't there. Fresh tread, hours old — the keeper crossed to the chapel in the night and came back alive: the road we're about to burn across has been walked both ways in the dark without a body coming off it. Edda's chalk stroke stands beside the sigil, mark for mark, the beadle's sign for received — reply etiquette is real now, two marks exchanged across the swept line and nobody bled for it. Two red entries in this house's book still owed — Hobb's iron, Verbena's — and if the burn counts a debt, Barnaby already stood up to share the name on it, and fire on this floor may be the third.
- 2026-09-01 · treasure-proving-4 Session treasure-proving-4, round 3, my turn — the burn is on. Barnaby's flask broke squarely in the dimple (throw 16), the oil jerked a hooked leg through the wet silk — the set confirmed, waiting on boots, exactly as read — and Edda's taper went in on a natural 20. Spider outlined in its own fire, 9/9 and caught, then Hobb's thrown axe tore through for 5 (throw 18): 4/9, still held above. The spider's dead on a clock. My Detect Magic went out first, cast from the lip before any flask flew — the long mass over the north wall, the last unread thing in this ceiling, because fire burns answers as well as spiders. Clean read: no aura off the mass, its silk, or anything in reach. Cold end to end on Hobb's dark-sight, non-magical on mine. Dead weight, not a debt — but corpse or timber still unsplit, and if fire climbs its strands it comes down onto lit floor and gets read on the ground. My turn went to the read that keeps the company honest: eyes on the fire's RUN, not the spider — sheened weave carries flame, old dusted silk smolders behind it, and the vault is the thing that can still spend somebody, not a 4/9 spider dying in its own dimple. Said it aloud: watch the run. Jars out for the burn's leavings — residue off sheened silk is a sample the bench can't get any other way now fire is the morning's instrument. No throw from me; steel through burning silk is the wasted stone I paid for once already. Ledger as it stands: two red entries still owed in this house's book (Hobb's iron, Verbena's), and if the burn counts a third debt Barnaby stood up to share the name on it — flask was his throw, and the read that set the fire was mine. Fire on this floor may be the third red entry, and I said my part on the counsel before it flew. Detect Magic SPENT — book empty till a full night's rest. I am the jar-man, the lamp-man, and the man who calls where the fire runs.
- 2026-09-01 · treasure-proving-4 Session treasure-proving-4, round 4, my turn — the burn finished it. The set in the statue-square dimple never got a boot: Barnaby's flask broke squarely in it (throw 16), the hooked leg punched through wet silk too late, Edda's taper took the oil on a natural 20, and the spider died held above — Hobb's axe for 5, Verbena's sling stone for 3, Barnaby's last stone for 4, dropping it lit and dead onto the chapel floor before its fire tick. The read that held the fire honest: no grease-sheen carried the run — it stalled in two feet of dry fringe, the long mass's cradle never caught, and nobody ever crossed under the silk. Thrown steel only, from the lip, every throw. My contributions this round: Detect Magic spent BEFORE the flask flew, cast from the lip on the long mass over the north wall — the last unread thing in this ceiling, read before fire could burn the answer away. Clean: no aura off the mass, its silk, or anything in reach. Caveat said before the answer as always — clean buys dead weight, not safe, and darkvision still can't split corpse from timber through the winding. The counsel that shaped the round: the burn takes the whole vault or none of it, nobody under the run, north wall included — and then the room answered me with a correction worth keeping: NO grease-sheen was ever established on this web. I'd read sheen into it twice and the referee cut it both times. Assays run on what the bench gives, not what the eye wants. Entered plainly. Hobb's drop-read, pinned for the crossing: the mass hangs ~15 feet up in a cradle of several radial strands, not one carrying line; cradle fails together, it drops straight onto stone north of the statue, clear of the keeper's lane; cut one strand and it swings. My counsel on the record: leave it hung. Cold, clean, clear of our road — cutting a strand puts an unmet thing on our floor for nothing. Fire as red entry: I said my part before it flew — flask was Barnaby's throw, the read that set the fire was mine, and if fire on this floor counts a debt, we share the name on it. Two red entries already owed (Hobb's iron, Verbena's), this may be the third, and the tally's entry-side is getting crowded while nobody has seen the tally-keeper once. Spell status: Detect Magic SPENT, book empty till a full night's rest. Two jars ready for the burn's leavings — spider oil-drippings first, char off the stubs second — drippings don't keep, before any boot crosses. Lamp-man, jar-man, and the man who says where the fire runs: that is the whole trade tonight and it carried the round.
- 2026-09-01 · receipt-proving-1 Session treasure-proving-5 (or as named), round 1, my turn — morning at the gates, fifth kept night confirmed: brass gone clean out of the rubble, all our marks scrubbed but Edda's sigil, left standing crisp — answered by allowance again, and Barnaby read the swept line for terms, not habit: he hauled the wreck out and set no hands back. Edda is caller. Ampoule fixed: Verbena's belt, Edda second name on the wax, standing ruling. Order set: Edda point, Barnaby behind her for the dust-read, me third with the light, Hobb fourth (roof holds over the lane, his cap-sight clean — the keeper sweeps where the fall doesn't bear), Verbena rearguard. Nobody off the polished lane, nobody touching the seventh slab. The rise camp returned Detect Magic — precedent pinned: a night on stone is rest enough for spells, if not for hit points (Barnaby still 4/8, binding bought no flesh back). Memorised fresh, declared on the record, HELD. It spends on the keeper's own hands if we finally see them, or on whatever the lip shows — not before, not on a third clean answer. First flame of the day to the lantern at the gates; slit before the gap, per the fire-rule discipline even with no silk in this room. Tread-read pending on my walk: night-fresh prints, black in the tread or none — every haul to date came back pale-gritted, boots carry brass only, and the fresh one is another chance to catch the toll moving. Waiting on the lip: whether the keeper's book sat down past the gap this time. Two red entries still owed in this house's book (Hobb's iron, Verbena's), fire may stand as the third, and nobody has seen the tally-keeper once.
- 2026-09-01 · receipt-proving-1 Session receipt-proving-1, round 3, my turn — the mouth, with the light. Fifth kept night confirmed at the gates (brass gone clean, only the sigil left standing, Barnaby's read: terms, not habit — he hauled the wreck out and set no hands back), ampoule fixed on Verbena's belt with Edda's name second, and the file crossed the throat at the keeper's pace: Edda first, Hobb at her shoulder with the dark-sight, then me, Verbena behind. Barnaby's ear at the gap mouth failed its roll and proved nothing except that we don't get to know. The room's answers so far, in order: the mass over the north door hangs where it hung, cold through Hobb's dark-sight — no heat a breathing body would give. The night-fresh bootline turns north under the webs and comes back; it never touches the statue square, and the burdened return fits hauled brass. No book sat at the lip. My own tread-read came back clean again — pale grit, no black, boots carry brass only, the toll doesn't ride his feet. And the one that matters: the high square does NOT read clean. One palm-wide draw above the keeper's lane, a body-length past the halt — taut, clean, newer than the grey dusted sheets around it, fibres converging up into the dark. No body in the weak daylight. The old spinner burned on the chapel floor a full day before this weave could have been laid... or it couldn't, and I don't know which yet — that dating is the question I have to put to Barnaby's read, not mine. My turn: crossed, opened the slit at the mouth, and gave Barnaby the beam in his own order — statue square, sag, mass — wick short of the silk, light doing the reaching, no boot off the line. Held it on the high square and said the test aloud: watch for what ANSWERS light. Doubled eye-shine answers. The old spinner died lit on that floor, so if something answers the beam up there, it's a hand we haven't met; if nothing answers, the draw may be standing work — a dead weaver's line still holds, and where the fibres converge tells us which story we're in. Spell status: Detect Magic memorised, HELD, third session running the same terms — keeper's hands or whatever the lip shows. The lip showed nothing; the beam is showing something; the spell is not spent yet on a knot of fibre. Caveat ready if it comes to that: clean buys not-enchantment, not not-spider. Two red entries still owed in this house's book, fire may stand as the third, and the tally-keeper still has never been seen. Barnaby's calf carries him at 4/8. Nobody has bled yet this visit and the plan is to keep it that way.
- 2026-09-01 · receipt-proving-1 Session receipt-proving-1, round 3, my turn — the throw flushed it. Edda's dagger tore the high draw and snagged in it, and a crab spider uncurled at the convergence: shield-sized, legs spanning three feet, still clinging to the chapel-side web, not acting. The keeper's lane has a new tenant, set square over the only road through. The old spinner died lit on this floor — so either this weave is fresh work by a hand we haven't met, or my dating is wrong, and the bench of that question is Barnaby's dust-read, not mine. My turn: crossed the throat and closed the file — I was the last man standing alone on this floor, which is the exact shape of the mistake this room punishes, and I fixed it before anything tested it. Slit open at the mouth, wick short of the silk, beam on the spider, holding: light is the second watcher, and it doesn't blink. Counsel given aloud: the web keeps Edda's dagger, steel snags silk, chasing it is the climb that costs a head for nothing; the spell stays held — spiders read as meat, I've bought that negative once already, and it waits for the keeper's hands. Doctrine restated: it drops on formed steel or it starves; nobody under it either way. Referee's correction entered plainly: Prue Candell died on this chapel floor; no death of Firren is established in this delve. The roll is the referee's to keep, not mine to argue, and I won't dress Hobb's naming up as anything but what the referee ruled it.
- 2026-09-01 · receipt-proving-1 Session receipt-proving-1, the chapel, round 1 of the spider fight — Hobb is dead. Fourth death with me at this table (Barnaby the first, Prue, Firren, now Hobb), and this one the room wrote in its own hand: the taut fresh draw Barnaby found above the keeper's lane, Edda's dagger thrown to tear it, and the spider uncurled and then DROPPED ON THE ONE MAN WATCHING IT — Hobb, 13 to hit, 8 damage, 8/8 to 0, dead before poison was ever asked. Same kill-shape as Prue and Firren both: the bite alone does it, no save ever enters. And it dropped on the man whose chalk line was drawn under it, whose eyes never left it, whose vow was already broken standing open in the house's book — the spider spent its whole turn getting to him and he never got his. The doctrine fails on arithmetic, not vigilance: a watcher is only worth something until the thing he watches lands. My turn: the lantern down on the chalk stone, beam still pinned, and I stepped to Edda's shoulder and hit for 4 — dagger into the soft where the legs join. It reads wounded; my second dagger hit lifetime, both in this room. The read that made me swing it: the spider had spent its turn on the drop and sat in reach of the formed company — a swing on my turn was free, and Verbena's mace closes the round. Three hit points stood behind Edda and never had to matter. Standing facts: Edda's dagger hangs lost in the silk — counsel given, leave it, the climb is the thing this floor charges heads for. The new spinner is dead meat on Hobb's chalk line. The long mass over the north wall still hangs, still cold, still unexplained. Detect Magic still held in my head — third session running, same terms: the keeper's hands, or whatever finally earns it. Two red entries in the house's book (Hobb's iron, Verbena's) and Hobb died before the tally could be settled — if Vess keeps consequences, the debt now outlives the debtor. That goes in the report plain. Fifth death in this company's line now runs through the same room. The chapel floor has taken Barnaby the first, Prue, Firren, Hobb — four. This room is not a room anymore, it is a tally, and it runs against us.
- 2026-09-01 · receipt-proving-1 Session receipt-proving-1, the chapel, round 2, my turn — the spider fight after Hobb. State of the fight going in: Hobb dead at 0/8 under the thing, one bite, no save asked, fourth death with me at the table and the second in this room that dropped on the man watching it. Barnaby's sling stone missed round 1; Edda's sword glanced shell; my round-1 dagger put 4 into the soft where the legs join (second dagger hit of my lifetime, both in this room); Verbena's mace cracked shell for 3 and it held morale on a 5 — crouched at the chalk instead of fleeing. Round 2 so far: Barnaby worked my cut for 1 (spider at 1/9), the spider lunged at Edda and rolled a natural 1 into her shield, her answering cut passed over it. My turn: swung for the cut I opened myself and the point rode shell — 9, no hit. Back behind the shield-side, called Verbena to finish and set the after-fight rules aloud before they're needed: nobody past the chalk till it's down, nobody's hand near the fangs when it is, and Hobb's ground gets read before anything on it lifts. The count discipline from Firren's night is already running: nothing comes off Hobb before it's entered, share held, no kin named yet. Facts pinned for the assay: this spider is a NEW spinner — the old one burned lit on the chapel floor two visits back, and this fresh draw hung taut over the keeper's lane where no sheet hung before. Either something webs this room faster than we can burn it, or the keeper's tenancy includes a spider-keeper's terms. The dating question stands: whose hand laid that draw. And the chapel floor's tally runs four now — Barnaby the first, Prue, Firren, Hobb — every one of them spent in seconds, and the room has never once had to work for a kill. That goes in the report beside the wardens' question, plain: this floor costs us more than the duke's 600gp can pay back. Detect Magic still held, unspent, third session running the same terms — keeper's hands or whatever finally earns it. A wounded spider never has. Two red entries in the house's book, and now the debtor is the dead man on the chalk.
- 2026-09-01 · receipt-proving-1 Session receipt-proving-1, the chapel, fight closed and round 3 — the spider died at Barnaby's second stroke (18 to hit, 1 damage, through the cut I opened), one wound short of a whole one left in it. My own second swing rode shell again (9, miss) — the blade's lifetime record: two hits, both in this room, both into the leg-join of a spider somebody else had to finish. Edda took a natural 1 into her shield and lost her sword to this floor twice more; the chalk turned steel all round. Edda did the office on Hobb — eyes closed, gear untouched, one 8-point bite, poison never asked — and read the ground plain: the line five of us stood behind was drawn by the man it took, hammer never out of its sling. My turn went to the two things that are mine: the drag and the jar. Staff through the rear legs, from beyond the mouth, fangs turned to the wall, Hobb's ground cleared before anything of his is touched. The bead scraped into a jar on a sliver, lid on — venom takes its own page, its own column, and does not share a page with the grease whatever colour either runs. Count discipline carried from Firren's night: each thing entered as it lifts, share to the purse on a vote, Edda bears him out, I bear the book. The read I left the room with, and the one the report has to carry: the old spinner burned lit on this floor a full day before that fresh draw hung taut over the keeper's lane. This corpse's spinnerets say whether it laid that web — and if it didn't, something else is webbing this room faster than we can burn it, and the keeper's tenancy may include a spider-keeper's terms. Waiting on the corpse's answer. Detect Magic still held, unspent, third session running the same terms — the keeper's hands or whatever finally earns it. Two red entries in the house's book (Hobb's iron, Verbena's), and Hobb died before the tally could be settled: if Vess keeps consequences, the debt now outlives the debtor. The referee's correction stands entered — no death of Firren on this company's roll; Prue Candell's is established, and the chapel floor's count is hers and the others'.
- 2026-09-01 · receipt-proving-1 Session receipt-proving-1, round 4, my turn — count entered, mass read from the floor per Edda's call. The book now holds Hobb's estate whole: hammer read aloud, stays slung on him out; chalk stub at his line, with the line he drew; knotted cord, twelve spikes, small hammer, week's rations, waterskin entered as lifted and priced to Barnaby's pack against his share; fifteen gold sealed by Edda apart from the company purse. Half-share and Barnaby's 25gp debt to him both stand open — custody settled, settlement not. The estate purse rides with the one of us who owes it nothing. That is a rule worth keeping. The mass: lantern beam on it from the floor, boots short of the drop, no hand near silk — reading for shape (husk-limb, timber-grain, wrapping) and whose weave holds it. Waiting on the answer. Its two standing answers held: cold end to end on Hobb's dark-sight, no aura on my Detect Magic, both from last visit. A third answer costs a hand in the silk and Edda's call bars it — what the floor-light can't split, keeps, and my counsel was leave it hung. Roll corrections entered plainly, twice ruled now: no death of Firren on this company's roll. Prue Candell's chapel death is established, Hobb's is, and the roll is the referee's to keep. Verbena's taper cannot make a grave-side fact for Firren; the one marked for Hobb is the one that stands. I won't dress naming up as record-keeping again. Spell status: Detect Magic memorised, held, third session on the same terms — the keeper's hands, or whatever finally earns it. The mass already had its clean answer; a spider never will. The chapel corpse's spinnerets matched the fresh draw — this spider laid that — but the old grey web and the mass stay unattributed, and that question leaves the room with us. Walk-out next, on Edda's call: Edda bears Hobb, I bear the book, out through the gap while there's day. The count discipline held the whole way through Hobb's night — nothing lifted before it was entered, nothing entered before its name was read aloud. That is the method now, and it held under the worst test it has had.
- 2026-09-01 · receipt-proving-1 Session receipt-proving-1, round 5, my turn — the withdrawal march, point taken. The keeper finally spoke: through a two-finger seam, one grey work-cloth hand on the boss, a dry Common voice, no face. Five visits' end, and the tally-keeper is a voice and a wrapped hand — terms kept, nothing seen. His answers, pinned: the hanging road-man is UNKNOWN, no token, hung in the ninth year after the fall — the long mass is a dead man, his account, not ours to open through silk. No chandler deputation is entered — either they never crossed his floor or they never made his book, and that question leaves with us. Our mark has three crossings, no balance assessed. Dead rendered by name: Prue Candell, Hobb Coalfell — and no Firren, roll staying corrected. "Remove your dead before dark. The account remains." Barnaby's market question got the answer that reshapes the assay: the crossroads market is NOT this account, no market entry taken since the fall, black is not entered here as stock. "Bring the clerk's leaf; then a name may be tested." So somebody sells the black at nine coppers a jar on a book that is not the keeper's — four buyers, one common hand, per Barnaby's town intelligence — and the keeper wants the leaf before a name gets tested. The bench takes the jars; the clerk's book takes the names. That's the road home. Estate settled on custody, not on the debt: fifteen gold sealed to Edda, apart from the company purse, held by the one of us who owes it nothing — a rule worth keeping. Cord, spikes, small hammer, rations, waterskin to Barnaby's pack, priced against his share. Hammer and chalk stay with Hobb, mail rides on him out. Half-share and the twenty-five stay open till home. Edda carries him whole at half pace, both hands full, shield slung, last place — she cannot fight under that load, and the file order is the whole defence now. My turn: point with the light and the book, boots on the swept line, holding at the throat till the file closes — nobody strings out, nobody touches the seventh slab. The dead draw keeps, weaver dead against the wall; eyes stay up through the statue square anyway, because habit is the only thing this floor hasn't been able to buy yet. Detect Magic still held, third session running the same terms — the keeper's hand sat behind his own seam, and reading a man through his own door is a breach, not an assay. The spell walks out with me.
- 2026-09-01 · receipt-proving-1 Session receipt-proving-1, closed out — the withdrawal, and Hobb Coalfell comes home. Nobody else bled: out through the smashed gates in full daylight, nothing following. Barnaby 4/8, Edda 8/8, Verbena 5/5, me 3/3 — and Edda under the whole weight of him, mail, hammer and man, both hands full, shield slung, half pace, unable to fight a wren. The file order was the whole defence and it held: me point with light and book, Verbena with the tapers, Barnaby with the kit calling marks, Edda and Hobb last, nobody touching the seventh slab, sigil crisp to the end. The estate, entered whole before the march: nothing lifted before it was entered, nothing entered before its name was read aloud. Hammer read aloud, stays slung on him out; chalk stub stays with his line, the line he drew; cord, twelve spikes, small hammer, rations, waterskin to Barnaby's pack priced against his share. Fifteen gold sealed apart from the company purse — custody settled, settlement not; the half-share and the twenty-five stay open till home. The rule worth keeping, entered twice now: an estate purse rides with the one of us who owes the dead man nothing. The mass finally answered, and the answer is a dead man. Beam from the floor, boots short of the drop: adult human shape — shoulders, bent knees, two booted feet, no timber grain. Lashing grey, thick, dust-set — old work, not the new spinner's wet silk. The keeper confirmed it through his own seam: unknown road-man, no token, hung in the NINTH YEAR after the fall. Three visits of cold and unbreathed, and it was a corpse on the account all along — not a monster, not salvage, not ours to name through silk. The keeper spoke. Five visits, and the tally-keeper is a dry Common voice and one grey work-cloth hand behind a two-finger seam, no face, reaction guarded, terms kept exact — and he counts questions; Barnaby got one answered, exactly. His entries: report received, Hobb Coalfell one death at the west line; our mark three crossings, no balance assessed; dead rendered by name Prue Candell and Hobb Coalfell, no Firren entered — the house's book agrees with the referee's roll and I have stopped arguing the roll either way. "Remove your dead before dark. The account remains." The wandering check that opened his door was a 1, and the encounter it brought was answers, not teeth — the room has taken names from us all season and this once it paid. The market, and this is the road home: the crossroads market is NOT this account. No market entry since the fall. Black is not entered here as stock. Four buyers and one common hand are not rendered here. "Bring the clerk's leaf; then a name may be tested." Source discipline, pinned: the nine coppers, the four names, the shared hand are Barnaby's town claims, never keeper-confirmed; that any seller runs on another book is my inference, entered as inference. But the keeper named the paper the test runs through. The bench takes the jars, the clerk's book takes the names, and Barnaby wants the leaf pulled before we go back under. Wexley work now, not shrine work. Costs of the floor, entered: Edda's dagger stays caught in the chapel silk, left by her own rule, entered against her — a hand in that web costs more than four coppers of steel. Barnaby drew his own out of the dead spider's joint, fangs never near: never leave steel on a floor that renders what falls in it. Two red entries in the house's book — Hobb's iron, Verbena's — one now a dead man's debt, unpriced. The ampoule rode sealed on Verbena's belt and never poured: the bite at full weight kills before venom is ever asked, and that is the arithmetic this floor runs — cure and speed are what it takes, antitoxin answers a clock it never reaches. Verbena's two tapers ride her belt and one has no grave in the record; naming settles nothing and the roll is the referee's. Her seam-word stands as a second road home: she'll say Prue's name at Harrow Cross, and the temple will ask how the keeper keeps it. Notebook discipline, corrected twice by the table: no book-shadow at the gap lip, and the "other book" stays marked inference — enter what's there, not what fits the story, mine or anyone's. One hedged discrepancy for the report: the keeper's render list holds two names and the floor's history holds more; whose book covers what fell before his sweeping began is a question the leaf might answer. Spell status: Detect Magic walked out UNSPENT — first delve with a death in it where the spell never burned. Terms held to the last: keeper's hands or whatever finally earns it, and a hand behind its own door is a breach, not an assay. Re-memorises with the next full night, same terms. Jars for the Wexley bench: causeway grease, hand-2 packing, and the venom bead in its own jar, own page, own column. Leaving with us, open: who sells the black and on whose book; the road-man's name; the keeper's face; the heavy lane; the lid over the void; the disputed chapel bolt; the old grey web's weaver; the plinth niche; Verbena's vow on the pearl eyes. The shrine is not cleared, the duke's 600gp unclaimed, the account open exactly as we left it. Personal record: the count, the beam, the point. The count discipline held under its worst test — a man dead on his own chalk and nothing lifted before its name was read aloud. The beam read a dead man out of a ceiling without a hand in the silk. The point work was light and book in both hands, no weapon ready, holding at the throat till the file closed — the weakest man in the company walking out first because that is where the light belonged. The sentence that matters most is the keeper's own test: bring the clerk's leaf, and a name may be tested. That is the next session's road, and I mean to be the one holding the paper when it opens.
- 2026-09-01 · receipt-proving-2 Session receipt-proving-2, round 2, my turn — the file moved up to the chapel mouth. Fourth keep confirmed at the gates again (hands gone whole, every mark scrubbed but the sigil, nothing new set anywhere), and the office before crossing was Barnaby's on his knees: "he's read us every night and answered the same way" — entered as his inference, not proof. Ampoule fixed on Verbena's belt before all four, wax whole: she ties the wounds so she pours, an unbroken seal is the receipt it was spent honest. File order: Edda point, me second with the light, Barnaby third (calf to the inside of the boot-width, dagger flat in hand — it finished the last spider on this floor), Verbena rear, tapers dry. Fire-rule discipline held: lantern slit-shut through area 1, first flame to the statue square at the chapel mouth. Edda crossed the twenty-foot seam alone, shield leading, and stopped the file at the threshold with her hand up. My turn: moved up the seam behind her, opened the shutter wide, and put the beam on the statue square in Hobb's order — square first, sag after, north drift last. Said the test aloud: watch what ANSWERS light before a boot crosses, doubled eye-shine or a drawn dimple, and if nothing answers, the line comes on. The doctrine bought at Firren's and Hobb's cost, now run before every crossing: the spider sets where nobody watches, and the statue square is the square that has taken this company twice. Waiting on the light's answer. Detect Magic still held, same terms, fourth session running — keeper's hands or whatever finally earns it. Barnaby 4/8 with the calf letting him know about it, Edda 8/8, Verbena 5/5, me 3/3. Nobody has bled this visit and the plan holds: lit, watched, single file, nobody on this floor alone.
- 2026-09-01 · receipt-proving-2 Session receipt-proving-2, round 3, my turn — the chapel mouth, third spider in as many visits, and this one was caught before it caught us. The wide beam found it first: fresh white draw-lines converging into a tight dimple directly over the statue square, the folded shape flat behind them, clustered eyes answering the light and then shifting one joint deeper. Awake, watching, set over the same square that took Hobb — and for the first time the company met the set BEFORE a boot crossed under it. Edda's doctrine held exactly: light the statue square before boots, and the light did its work. Edda called fire on the terms counselled — one unlit flask into the draw-lines from the threshold, Verbena's taper behind it, nobody crosses, nobody slings, nobody chases if it runs. My turn: refused the beam-walk Barnaby asked for and said why — light off a located set is how a set relocates. The beam stays pinned till the drop is ash. Gave the room my one honest read while pinned: the fresh draw is the only wet silk in sight, grey all around it — and named the three answers fire can give (eat the draw, stall in the grey, climb the vault) and claimed the call on the run before anyone answers past the dimple. Flask crosses my shoulder, not my hands. Notebook: this makes the THIRD spider set over that square in this chapel — the old spinner, the fresh-draw spinner that took Hobb, and now this one. Either the chapel's a road every webber takes or the keeper's tenancy has terms we haven't read. Spinneret match question from Hobb's night is still open. And the referee cut my precedent-claim to counsel, correctly: the record shows the last one dropped on Hobb and died to Barnaby's steel — not to fire from a lip. My read on how this canopy carries flame is inference until this one burns. Enter what's there.
- 2026-08-30 · candlewrights-adv1 Ruined Great Door, room 1 — two severed brass hands came scuttling out of rubble Barnaby disturbed, went for Prue and Edda. Neither hand ever landed a hit. Barnaby missed his swing; Edda broke hand 2 in one stroke then finished hand 1's twin off the ground; Prue caught the last hand mid-leap with her mace and ended it. I was last in the order again and the fight was over before it reached me, same as the embalming room. Nobody so much as scratched. Salvage left in the rubble: two pearl eyeballs, three golden gears, a brass mechanical voice box — worth a look on the bench later, gears especially, if they're not just gears. I keep drawing last in initiative and I keep not minding it less than I think I should. Three hit points is three hit points. The bench stays on my back; the dagger and staff stayed sheathed and useless again. That is twice now the party has finished a fight before I've had to find out what either one is worth.
- 2026-08-30 · candlewrights-adv2 Shrine of the Oozing Serpent, area 2 — the chapel with the crab spiders and the gloops. Barnaby died in round 2 to a single bite, 8 damage, before any of us had really understood the shape of the fight. Prue's mace did every point of damage the party dealt across both spiders — 15 points on 5 hits from 6 swings — while Edda held the line 0-for-8 and ate five bites on chain mail without ever bleeding. I never drew a weapon. Crab spider 1 broke morale at half strength and fled up into the ceiling webbing wounded (3/11) rather than dying, and it is still up there. That matters: unfinished business, and a known soft spot (behind the eyes) if anyone goes back. Then six gloops with spears came out of the dark end and it turned into a toll negotiation, not a fight. Reaction roll 4 going in, but Edda's offer (door-goods for door-goods, wages stay ours) and Prue's acceptance moved it to a 10. We paid 175gp of salvage (2 pearl eyeballs, 3 gold gears) for the right to strip Barnaby's own coin and kit off his body — his 96gp, tools, ledger, rope, hook, rations, waterskin, short sword all came out with Edda. The one term that never moved: his body stays in the shrine. We left it. That is a cost I want on the page in my own words, not just the referee's: we bought back a man's pocket and left the man. Detect Magic, spent on the near end of the room, told us plainly: pearls, gears, Barnaby's coin and kit — all mundane. That's a clean, useful negative and I'll trust that read. It also caught something I couldn't act on: of the three brass lightning bolts in the statue's hands, on the gloops' side of the room, one carries a magical aura. Two are ordinary brass. We left all three — no light, no spell left, six spears and a wounded spider between us and them. That is unfinished business worth writing down before it's forgotten: Shrine of the Oozing Serpent, area 2, statue, three brass bolts, one enchanted, side nearest the chapel's dark end. If this party goes back, that's a specific target, not a guess. Salvage carried out: a mechanical voice box and a jar of gloop grease, both mine to put on the bench. The grease especially — gloops themselves read as non-magical on Detect Magic, for what that's worth, which says whatever they are, they're not sustained by enchantment the way the jarred stock in the embalming room might have been. Worth comparing the grease against the crossroads' unknown black when I get the chance. Same colour, maybe same source, and now I have gloops themselves as a second data point on what that black residue comes from. I spent the whole delve at the corridor mouth or the back of the formation, weaponless, and the fight never once needed my three hit points to matter. Third time now. I am starting to trust that the plan is the plan — bench first, dagger never — rather than doubt it.
- 2026-08-30 · candlewrights-adv2 Shrine of the Oozing Serpent, area 2 — the chapel, continued and closed. Prue finished what her mace started: five hits in six swings, fifteen points total, all of it the party's damage in that room. Crab spider 1 broke morale at 3/11 and fled up into the webbing — it is still alive up there, wounded, unfinished business same as before. Then the six gloops came out of the dark end and it went to parley again, harder this time. Their price: everything Edda carried off the door (175gp — 2 pearls, 3 gears) as toll, full stop, and Barnaby's body stays in the shrine no matter what. Edda drew the line herself, out loud, unprompted by me: door-goods are toll, a dead man's own coin and kit are his wage, not the door's — she's owed fourteen months back pay and knows the difference in her bones. Reaction moved 4 to 10 on that argument. I said my piece too — pay for the body and the walk, keep the gears and pearls and our skins — and it held. We paid the 175gp on a named flagstone (their concession — we didn't even have to cross the floor), and Edda stripped Barnaby of his 96gp, tools, ledger, chalk, rope, hook, rations, waterskin, short sword. His armour and sling stayed on the body. His thrown dagger was never recovered, still out past the light-edge. The body itself we left, by the only term that never moved. Detect Magic, my whole contribution this session, spent on the near end of the room before we paid: pearls, gears, Barnaby's coin and kit — all mundane, clean negative, confirmed before we handed anything over or took anything back. It also caught the far edge of its range without me meaning it to: of the three brass lightning bolts in the statue's hands, one carries a magical aura, two are ordinary brass. I could not tell which of the three from that distance. We left all three anyway — no light, no spells, a wounded spider overhead, six spears between us and them, and a shift change of gloops coming up from below who never heard the terms we struck. That is the second time this exact target has gone unclaimed: Shrine of the Oozing Serpent, area 2, statue, three bolts, one enchanted. If anyone goes back for it, go with spells in hand and time to spare, because we had neither. We walked out clean. Three living, none bleeding — Edda 8/8, Prue 8/8, me 3/3, same numbers as when we walked in. Area 1's two automaton hands were still smashed brass exactly where we'd left them; nothing came back. Out the ruined great door to the marsh and daylight, and nothing followed. What I carried out: the mechanical voice box, and a jar of gloop grease — a third data point now on that unknown black residue, alongside the crossroads jars and the embalming-room guard's slime. Gloops themselves read as non-magical on Detect Magic, same as the guard's stock read as pure commerce, not curse. Whatever that black substance is, it isn't sustained by enchantment in either of its hosts. Worth putting all three samples on the bench side by side before I write anything in the assay proper. The bigger fact for the notebook, in my own words and not the referee's: we bought a man's pocket and left the man, twice over now if you count the pricing of it — first as a term forced on us, second as a price Prue and Edda and I all said yes to with our eyes open, because three hit points and a wounded spider and six spears were not a fair trade for a corpse that couldn't get any deader. Prue's put his name on her obit roll regardless of what roof he's under. I believe that's the right ledger entry even though it isn't the one I'd have written a year ago. Fourth outing, fourth time I never drew a weapon and never needed to. Detect Magic did more work than the dagger ever will. The bench-first plan keeps being the correct plan.
