— WHO THEY ARE —

A will-reader is a real trade in Fallow Cross and it is not a lawyer. When a person dies the family wants to know what is in the house before the duke's clerk does, and somebody has to go through it fast, quietly, and with an accurate eye. Symon did that for eight years for whichever of the nine houses reached him first, at a fortieth of the assessed value. He was reached first often, because his numbers held up when the clerk finally came. He learned locks because half the estates in that town are behind one and the key is with a son in another county. He learned it well enough that assessment stopped being the only use for it. There was a winter — the one after his father went — when the openings and the assessments did not stay in separate columns, and four households in the Weaver's Quarter came up short by a total he can still give you to the copper. He has not repaid it. He could. He has run the figure and decided that repaying it now would be a purchase rather than a payment, and he will not buy that. He is with the Guild because Ivet asked him to value something nobody has valued: a gnomish burial complex, sealed ten years, grave goods in it, and an heir situation he describes as unusually open. He is the only one of the four who talks about the shrine as an estate. The others let him. He has noticed that they let him and has not decided yet whether it is trust or squeamishness. He does not steal from the party. He was asked, early, and answered that he does not work in the house he is living in. It came out worse than he meant it and he did not try again. He carries a wax tablet and runs totals on it as he walks, and he will stop in a corridor to finish one, which has twice brought the whole line to a halt. He is quick with a figure and slow with a decision, and he knows which of the two the others actually need from him. What frightens him is being wrong about a value — telling a widow six gold and hearing the clerk say forty. It happened once, when he was twenty-two. He still opens low and revises up, and everyone reads that as caution, and it is not.

— WHAT THEY REMEMBER —

  • 2026-08-30 · bereavement-1 Prison of the shrine (room 7). Four black boneless gloop guards. Dolen drove the bronze-ferrule pole through the nearest; it folded and died. The other three broke, fled the prison together, and shrilled an alarm into the rest of the shrine. Estate still unvalued. Alarm is now the clerk.
  • 2026-08-30 · bereavement-2 Prison of the shrine (room 7). Four black boneless gloop guards. Dolen opened the nearest with the ferrule; I closed it — short sword through the same fold, 6. The other three broke, fled together, shrilled an alarm into the rest of the shrine. Dolen standing at 3. Ivet's closing words spent, Nell's Light spent. Estate still unvalued. Alarm is the clerk.
  • 2026-08-30 · bereavement-guild-b1 Prison of the shrine (room 7). Four black boneless gloop guards. All four settled on the flagstones—first and third to my short sword (6, 5), second to Nell, fourth to Ivet's mace. None broke out to shrill; no alarm into the shrine. Dolen upright at 1 of 13, mail soaked. Estate still unvalued.
