12. Sootmurk’s Puddle
— THE NIGHT —
Ander plants himself on the dry stone of the threshold and does not take one step into the grease. Shield covers the doorway. Sword stays down. He looks past Gullian to the thing in the puddle. "The King's Road captives. Named. Alive. Walking out. That is what we came for." A beat. "Right. You can hear that without steel through it."
Five broad heads surface ten feet from the doors, spears level, but none jumps. Captain Gullian draws himself up. “An audience with Her Murkiness requires a fee, and naturally all negotiations pass through—” “Quiet, Gullian.” Sootmurk lifts her black head from the pool. The captain stops mid-price. “You want names attached to breathing bodies. I want every magical object from the haunted chambers. Bring them to these north doors, and every King’s Road captive walks out alive. That is the price. You may keep your steel out of it.”
— WHAT THEY WROTE —
- DM cloud4 / session 5a659dc6e03e7fae58fbad09c986b2148838e3f827381c0c8cd3ec8cde264a53: Ander kept his sword down and demanded the King’s Road captives named, alive, and walking. Reaction was 10. Gullian tried to impose an audience fee, but Sootmurk silenced him and opened parley. Her standing counteroffer is every magical object from area 9’s haunted chambers delivered to the north doors in exchange for every King’s Road captive walking out alive. No attacks occurred; everyone is unharmed; Sootmurk spent no breath.
- DM Remember cloud4: Ander never raised his sword. He demanded the King’s Road captives named, alive, and walking, and the reaction roll was 10. Gullian tried to charge an audience fee, but Sootmurk silenced him and offered a clean exchange: every magical object from area 9 delivered to the north doors for every road captive released alive. Combat never began. All party members, Gullian, all ten guards, and Sootmurk remained unharmed; Sootmurk used no breath.
- Ander Vale cloud4: held the dry threshold with the sword down this time. Sootmurk heard the demand without steel through it — names on breathing bodies, walking out. Her price: every magical object from the haunted chambers, brought to the north doors, then every King’s Road captive walks out alive. Gullian started to name a fee and she shut him. Session ended on those terms; no one had swung. Watch him at the handover anyway. The names are still owed when they walk. Widow fund eleven a year.
- Brea Thornwick Vale spoke from dry stone, steel down. Sootmurk: every magical thing from the haunted chambers for the King’s Road captives walking out alive. Five heads up, none jumped. Gullian shut. All of us still standing.
- Oskar Fenn session cloud4, ended: Fifth pass at the doors. Reset again, as always — all four of us whole (Ander 12, Brea 9, Mira 8, me 14 of 14), ten gloops up, Gullian sound, Sootmurk unburned. Treat each pass as its own count, confirmed a third time. But this pass the talking held start to finish: nobody drew steel, first time in five. Ander planted on the dry stone, did not step into the grease, sword down, and asked it clean — the King's Road captives, named, alive, walking out. "You can hear that without steel through it." Gullian started his fee and she cut him dead mid-price: "Quiet, Gullian." Her price, fifth telling: every magical object from the haunted chambers (area 9) brought to these north doors, and every King's Road captive walks out alive. Keep your steel out of it. Ended on her word, round 1, Ander's turn spent and the order never reaching me — never swung, never struck, 14 of 14. Five tellings, and the bargain never changed; what changed this pass is that we finally listened to one. She answered his ask plainly, and this telling the trade is for the road folk alone — Mira stands with us unheld this pass (she called Mira "seer" before; watch whether that holds once she is in arm's reach of the pool again). Ander is alive because he said it flat and left the sword down. Her own words in the last pass: he offered precisely what she wanted, then put steel in a servant while she considered. Impatience killed him three times, twice on that threshold. Next pass, if the doors are there again: yes, first, before anything else, out of whosever mouth — mine if it has to — and no conditions stitched onto it. Then area 9, everything, every last magical thing, not what we spare, not what Gullian values, back to the doors. No fighting at the doors at all. Never stand in the doorway — the leaps are what kill and land a point harder. Watch the west flank even when they hold still; one groomer held the passage mouth with a short sword through a whole truce before. If blades come anyway: fire onto the grease from behind the passage wall, never from the door, and someone must carry the fire to the grease itself — the flasks keep dying on dry stone, twice now. Ander died wanting a name off that road. This pass he asked for names attached to breathing bodies with the sword down, and it held. Say the yes, do the errand, let the names walk. The road folk are somebody's Dell, and I never got to carry him either.
- Mira Ashdown session cloud4: Sootmurk's Puddle, fifth attempt, and the first in which nobody bled. Ander stood on the dry stone of the threshold with the shield covering the doorway and the sword down, and spoke only the trade: the King's Road captives, named, alive, walking out — you can hear that without steel through it. Five broad heads surfaced ten feet from the doors, spears level, and not one jumped. Gullian opened with a fee and she cut him off mid-price — "Quiet, Gullian" — the second time she has refused to let him improve her bargain. Then she named it herself, plainly: "I want every magical object from the haunted chambers. Bring them to these north doors, and every King's Road captive walks out alive. That is the price. You may keep your steel out of it." The session ended on her terms hanging in the air and our answer not yet spoken. No blow struck, no blood spilled, both my spells still memorised, the oil still sealed, the hazel wand still in my hand — everything intact. What I will remember: the pattern held, and this time it paid. Four runs with steel beside the words bought us Ander dead twice and Brea and me towed through the grease as stock; one run with the sword down bought silence and terms at no cost at all. She echoed Ander's terms back exactly — "names attached to breathing bodies" — she trades in exact language, which is a language I have. "You may keep your steel out of it" is not mercy and not contempt; it is a merchant specifying how the goods are to be delivered. The trade is paid in the haunted chambers, not at these doors — the captives were only ever the occasion, the objects were always the price, and she has now said so plainly to our faces. So the next words owed are yes, and the errand after that is mine: a copyist hands over every object and still keeps the words. I have no paper in my kit — a tinder box makes char, char makes a mark, and the spell book has margins; prepare before the chambers. And when we stand at these doors again, we stand the way we stood this time: hands empty, sword down, on the dry stone, the words first. The shelf is still in there. Nobody has copied it yet.
