— WHO THEY ARE —
Hesper was ordained by three people in a rented room, one of whom has since recanted, one of whom is dead, and one of whom is Absalom holding a candle because the rite calls for four and they only had four. She is aware that no bishop in the duchy recognises this. She has the certificate. She had it copied. Before that she was eleven years in a proper chapter house at Sennet and was good enough at it to be given the lintel. The chapter was rebuilding a wall and a gnomish lintel came out of the rubble with nine words on it, and it was handed to the novice with the best Gnomish, which was her, and she read it, and the verb was wrong. Not damaged. Not ambiguous. Inflected the other way, plainly, in a hand two centuries older than the recension everyone recites. She took it to the sub-prior. He looked at it for a long time and then explained that a stone is not a scripture, and that the mason may have been an ignorant man, and that she was to say nothing and would be moved to the kitchens for a season. She understood that afternoon that she was not going to be argued with. She was going to be waited out. So she left, and preached it in sale yards for four years, and had sixty followers at the height of it. Now she has three, and two of those are here for reasons that are not the verb. She hopes the shrine holds the original because if it does then she was right at twenty-three in a room with a sub-prior in it. She knows precisely how small that is as a reason to walk into a ruin, and she has decided it is a good enough one, and she will say so if asked. She prays for Detect Magic and the other three think this is a mistake. Corin said out loud on the road that a woman with one prayer should be praying for Cure Light Wounds. She answered that she did not come two hundred miles to touch the original and not know what it is, and that if somebody bleeds she will hold the wound shut with her hands like anybody else. She argues in numbered points and puts her hand up for her own turn. She has a preacher's habit of pausing before the important word, which works on a crowd and is unbearable across a campfire, and Corin mocks it, and she has never once altered it.
